It's not just the roster though. He's bungled winnable games with the players he's had on hand. Playing DJ over Dwight, sticking with small guys around AD or Bron when teams were punishing those lineups with size, when he had size on the bench to counter. He's slow to adjust to things happening during stretches of games, it cost us wins. I'm not sure what perfect roster he is supposed to have. In general "defensive " players are average to poor on offense. So giving him a roster of defensive specialists only puts more pressure on James and Davis to do all the scoring. The bubble was great, I don't think it was due to Frank's coaching genius or anything. AD and Lebron were healthy and dominant, there are a lot of coaches capable of working with that scenario.
What exactly has Vogel done to make you think that he's so great? Like I said, he's had 1 good season in his last 7 on the bench. He's replaceable IMO. The NBA is a player's league, if you don't have your best players backing, it's not going to turn out good for you in this league period. IDk why James and Davis are so non plussed about Vogel getting axed, but that is most definitely a serious issue. This playing harder on defense is a generic answer to everything I guess. The teams that have been beating us, haven't just been " playing harder on defense ". There's another basketball adage that says " Great offense beats great defense ". He is pretty average to subpar with his offense IMO. He got a ring, great for us and him. It's a bit over the top tho, to suggest that Frank Vogel, is the only guy in this game that can coach the Lakers to success.
My concern is strictly our ability to find a replacement. And I can totally see us latching on to a name like Doc. We like names.
god this again. vogel's been as or more successful given his rosters/injuries than pretty much everyone named as likely replacements. that "basketball adage" refers to individual players in isolation settings. "defense wins championships" is another, better-supported basketball adage. finishing with the straw man ("only vogel can coach the lakers to success") is also ridiculous. nobody has said it. everyone has expressed pessimism that his replacement will be better and skepticism at your claims that he's the reason we've been bad the last two years.
So in essence you are saying that it's not that Vogel is really that great, but his replacement may or will probably be worse? Shrug..I'd roll that dice, he was our 3rd choice anyway. Maybe we'll do a better job of pouncing on our 1st choice this time around. I don't remember anyone throwing out his name when Luke got fired, so I'll wait to judge the quality of the candidates, once we actually see the people interviewing for the job. A Vogel coached team has finished 7th or worse in the Conference in his last 6 out of 7 campaigns. That is a fact, excuses aside, the NBA is a results oriented league. That is also a fact. When you get to the playoffs, every team is playing some measure of good defense. It's the teams that have the ability to consistently score against good defense that advance. Technically the Suns had the highest rated defense in the playoffs. Then they ran into a healthy Bucks team that could still score on them. It's not some magic elixir..the top two rated defensive teams in the NBA both lost in the 1st round last season.
he's been destined for greatness ever since appearing on Letterman as a teen. If we let him go, we'll regret seeing his defensive juggernaut teams in the playoffs years from now.
“As the Lakers are expected to focus on candidates with previous experience, former Los Angeles head coach and current Warriors assistant Mike Brown, who hired Snyder for that 2011-12 campaign, is known to have interest in departing Golden State for another opportunity in a team’s first chair. The same is said for Steve Clifford, most recently the Magic’s head coach from 2018 to ‘21, who served as a Lakers assistant in 2012-13. It’s also widely believed that Los Angeles, as has been the franchise’s custom, will prioritize coaching candidates with past connections to the organization”. That’s the worst part of the article. I buy it, our FO has zero creativity and it’s pathetic. If we hire Clifford or Brown I’ll be so disappointed, but if we hire Doc Rivers, my fandom will be tested. A C bag, a Clipper, the man who has blown more 3-1 series leads than anyone ever? Please god no. Makes me want to just keep Frank.
Overall I still like Vogel. One of two things have to happen. If we want to have any chance to win with him next season Westbrook has to go even if just paid to stay away. Lebron can't be your number one ball dominant guy. He can be a good piece but he is no longer that guy. If he can't accept that, and he likely won't, then he should be traded. If we are going to ride with Lebron as our main guy again then we need a different coach. I like someone like Sam Cassell simply because I think he would challenge Lebron. Lebron just doesn't have enough gas in the tank and as much of a stat guy as he as always been that is really all he is after now. If Lebron is still running the team next season it will be a rerun of this year. We would be doing Frank a favor to fire him.
It's maddening. This makes sense if either the outside world has burned Jeanie at every turn. They haven't. It's actually the opposite. It's those close to her that are f***ing her over. Her brother, Magic (multiple times and s***s on the team yearly on a ESPN run), and the Rambii (by trying to burn down her father's team). Or if we were stocked with the best of the best in the front office and on the bench over the years. Then you expect growth and promotion from within because there's under utilized talent everywhere you look (like SA over the years). This is not the case for us either. We have bargain bin, dollar store level personnel.
It’s terrible, top quality people at every position would line up to be hired here, GM, president, etc, but we only look from within, the nepotism is killing us. I read yesterday that we have only made the playoff twice since Dr Buss died. I knew it was bad, and I remember those times, but you forget just how bad until it’s put into those terms. I think the team under Dr Buss only missed the playoffs 1 time in like 30 years.
Since Doc doesn’t have ties to the Lakers… watch Jeanie hire him as head coach and then force him to take on Byron Scott, Derek Fisher, and Luke Walton on his staff. Probably bring back Magic as POBO while she’s at it, maybe give Phil an official role.
forgot about cassell. no laker ties, thus impossible, but he's in the mold of "who everyone is hiring". doesn't matter. nobody's going to to do well with our current roster.
Lol..you guys are letting the media gas you up and control the narrative already! I would be totally shocked if Doc Rivers is even a remote possibility for coaching this team. That man wants too much money and way too much control over his staff to suit the Lakers braintrust.
We will probably get Quinn Snyder. I think he's finished in Utah. Regardless of coach, it comes down to whether LeStatpad will follow.
I’d be pleased with Snyder. Even if he’s interested gotta worry about the front office fumbling it like they did during the last coaching hunt.
Oh they’re gonna fumble it. Gonna force him to add Rambis as an assistant so that he can give expert advice like playing DeAndre more
