Death threats or personal attacks to family members? Super lame. Although ... sometimes I'm a little skeptical about these claims. Nobody really asks for proof, and it's often a convenient way to get sympathy. But with a fanbase as large as ours, unfortunately it wouldn't surprise me if it was true. Our fans need to cut that crap out.

But crying about the "Westbrick" nickname, and trying to portray it as an attack on his family to get extra sympathy?

I’m not sure he’s really wrong. I don’t know why it’s just accepted that we go to these games and scream at these people like they’re animals, yell awful things we never would to a stranger on the street. I don’t see why booing and cheering isn’t enough, and maybe yelling at the refs for bad calls, etc. It’s not going to change though, so I guess good for him if that helps him feel a little better about it, I can imagine in todays game it can start to weigh on players when they don’t just get it from the crowd, but any social media they touch as well. I get that it comes with the job and the big bucks, but I can still see that it would get old. This is separate from his play, as a person I can see it would get old for him, especially coming to play at home and then it being this bad. Sucks.

Take this opportunity to sit him and sell it as it's to protect his mental health.
You cannot whine because your name is being called Westbrick. It's not racist or insultuous. It's related with basketball purely and it's really sad that a player goes out like this for such a thing. The guy is not in shape mentally to carry the season

I think that’s what really puts this one over the top for me beyond just it’s negative impact on the floor and for the team as a whole. We knew his flaws, saw the bad fit, and still made this move.

I think fans go too far a lot. Family should be off limits as well as harassing guys in public.

Booing and light taunting during the game though isn’t out of bounds IMO. I don’t think he should’ve mentioned Westbrick as there’s little doubt that’s going to get worse going forward. It’s also not a new nickname.

I’m guessing the other stuff is piling up and he’s tired of it all. Just another sign this whole thing needs to end.

    no way.

seriously, though, i agree that it's weird that this is how grown ups want to spend their time as fans at games. it speaks to how empty their lives must be outside that arena or off social media or whatever.

to shift gears, if russ's season weren't littered with junk like this, he might have some equally ardent supporters.

i'm sorry, that's absolute trash. just watching a dude get offensive rebounds whilst guarding literally nobody and nothing. that's in the first quarter of a game you should see as winnable. get out of here. laker fans should sign a letter that he gets his name back if he opts out.

There could be a reason why people are calling you Westbrick? and it has nothing to do with your family.

How can he just stand there? He's not even pretending that he's guarding someone... just stands there looking at the crowd, or his shoes, or who knows what.

The fans making death threats are idiots…

But come on, make your layups and people stop calling you Westbrick. Bringing it up and having your family go on social media to call it guarantees the fans will continue calling you Westbrick, even when you go 10/10

I’m with Russ here. He’s a human being and of course it’s disrespectful. If it were funny heckling in some way then there might be some merit in it but just yelling this is stupid and comes off as taunting and calling attention to one’s self. It’s not clever.

I hate watching Russ. It's a miserable experience. He's been bad and lazy and disinterested and uncoachable and because of his contract (not his fault) we're in a tough spot for a bit. All warrant lots of frustration from a fan base expecting a trip to the Finals.

He's the face and poster boy for our collective anger and in turn most the hostility get pointed his way. BUT at the end of the day, this is a game. It doesn't mean anything in the grand scheme of what's important in the universe. It's entertainment and escapism for fans. I think the fan interaction with the players at games in the past few seasons has really gotten out of hand. The social media aspect is dangerous, especially when a faceless coward can reach out to your wife or kids. That's so out of bounds, that they should have to meet the player in person and face whatever is coming their way.

Russ the player is one of my least favorite Lakers in a long time. But I have no problem with Russ the person and people have to remember these players are people. They're husbands, they're sons, they're fathers. I can't imagine how s***ty it is for Russ to not want his kids at the games. I imagine he was really stoked when he got here and thinking he'd bring them to as many home games as possible to now where he doesn't want them to leave the house because they'll get heckled somewhere.

In general I agree that fans can get too toxic, forget that these players are human beings. Some fans have been crossing the line with personal attacks and bringing up family.

But calling him “Westbrick” is NOT crossing the line IMO.

He’s trying to make the “Westbrick” insult a family thing since it’s their last name, but cheesy nicknames about a player’s last name are not egregious. I think it’s a lame insult and sure I understand him being annoyed by it, but it’s still an insult grounded in basketball. It’s NOT a personal attack on his character or family.

Death threats aside which is completely unacceptable but I most that do are either kids or morons.

But westbrick? Come on, you ain’t winning this one.

Whether your an actor, politician or athlete. You’re a celebrity at this point and public scrutiny comes with.

Honestly, he had it a lot better than other players and I think fans were pretty tolerant.

I think with all those championship comments he said throughout the season just alienated him.

He’s an LA boy and he says that he joins lebron/ad/melo/Howard with no championship expectations? On the lakers?? I thought this for a while, I think dude is narcissistic, either that or he’s extremely dense.

And in fairness he was asked the question; he didn't bring it up.

And I understand speaking out about death threats against your and your family; that's just silly.

I think it would be best for all parties for him to find a new home this summer.

    Shrugs. Just isn't working out.

From LeBum to Tragic Johnson, no one is exempt from name calling. Especially on the road playing for a team like ours.
