Best article about the Lakers Mona’s written in forever, especially since being shut out. Apparently she’s getting some access again … or … she’s written a better piece than those in her circles who got the insider leaks originally from Handy (still my pick / seriously doubt it was Vogel), maybe Russ’s brother (the hard to believe account coaching staff went all in on maxing LeBron’s game and leaving Russ to figure things out for himself) (and possibly “him feeling like he was getting singled out in team meetings” [though that might have been Handy too, along with the nugget the staff had considered the radical move of benching him to make a point for weeks]).

Am happy to hear what I’ve been hoping that LeBron has been continually having the talks with him constructively and I’d expect those will be getting more intense (note him slamming the ball down in disgust after Russ killing their last hope with time running out in the Miami game with the reckless balls out full court drive in traffic and losing the ball. Also glad to hear Pelinka had a two hour heart to heart with him after arriving in Orlando and that Vogel has had multiple sessions with him. I think from what we see that all of it is starting to get through that thick skull of his as evidenced with the much better play warts and all and remain optimistic with the caveat always of key players (ALL of them now from the only 9-10 we have) staying healthy and getting Nunn back and gelling at the 11th hour going into the playoffs. Puncher’s chance.

    Thanks Mona.

Few things stood out to me from Ramona's piece...
-Rob had a 2 hour meeting with Russ in ORL
-Vogel and the players are still in constant communication with him. Trying to make this work.
    - Russ was going to talk the the media after the Indy game, but our PR team told him to skip it
    - Lakers aren't expecting much at the trade deadline

i'd add to it that people inside the organization seemed surprised by a) russ and a center not working and b) our defense suffering after moving kcp and eagle.

i mean, many of us were concerned about those exact things coming into the season.

Letting go of AC Fresh was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back this season. That did NOT work. They should have kept him. KCP was the main cost of the Westbrook trade. You gain at PG but you lose a valuable two way SG in the process. You could get away with it to some extent with AB who isn’t quite the scorer or defender as KCP but does enough of both to hold it down.

But we are really missing Caruso. When Russ isn’t working you just sub AC in and viola, perfect backup who works great with Lebron or without him, knows the team and system and does exactly what we need.

The FO were penny wise pound foolish re AC. They should have split the money between him and THT, two years apiece. Now we are stuck with THT who hasn’t improved and no AC. Or even just bit the bullet and paid them both for longer instead of saying “we are all in” publicly and then going cheap when it mattered. The FO knew we would all be pissed when we let AC walk for nothing and we are. Biggest mistake of the off-season by a mile. To me much bigger than trading for Westbrook.

That was such a cheap shot by Allen. And only one game suspension? I feel bad for AC who loses 6 to 8 weeks. That sucks.

I’m honestly amazed players don’t get broken necks and die / or are paralyzed or far more severely injured than typically happens …. more often than they rupture achilles tendons with the heights their prone bodies fall from and how they land. Yikes!!!

Caruso avg 20 minutes a game. Yet the defense somehow revolved around his presence? Big reach on that one.

Slow on the uptake. I knew it was a bad fit before they made the trade.

i don't love it because it's not productive right now. he doesn't respond to it.

i think windhorst's insight was the most important, and something i argued last week: if he can't make it work here, literally nobody will want him. career is over. i think eventually, he'll see that like melo did. hopefully, he sees it sooner than melo did.

Too many turnovers but still a pretty solid game out there.

This is the best it gets for him offensively. Just gotta limit the turnovers.

Still, it's a bummer he needs 14 shots to only end up with 15 points.

The bar is set so low that this is considered a good game. Brooklyn w/o Durant and Irving are just not a good team

Against a good team, I just don't know want this guy anywhere on the court for long stretches. Lakers controlling the game with 10 seconds and the last shot to end the half: TO leads to an easy layup the other end: potential 4 or 5 point switch right there. Then in the second half before he made some buckets again TO's in bad spot leads to Nets bucket and then a 3 pointer that missed so bad it might have been a to and led to another easy bucket the other way. I mean that was the only real point that Nets were within striking distance all due to one guy

As long as AD and Lebron stay healthy...folks are going to be complaining about Russ, all the way to the Finals.
