well, except that if monk plays this well with average defense, we won't be able to afford to keep him. this is the danger of cycling through one-year deals each offseason.
We sort of kept KCP around before we signed him to a long term deal, I wonder if Monk is keen to sign with Klutch and get looked after on the back end.
i think that was a little different. 1. we overpaid kcp on a 1 year deal to start, which a) set our ability to keep him at a higher rate due to cap rules (125% of previous year's salary) and b) generated good will 2. he didn't perform that well, and we still were able to give him another 12 million the next year (over mle and establishing early bird, though that mattered little here) 3. the real value with kcp came when we used the above to get him for 8 per (slightly below market value) the next year, probably in part to secure full bird rights (which is good for both parties) so the big advantage was that we were able to pay kcp 30 million in his first two seasons while we established rights that met his market value. we have no way of even getting close to that with monk, who probably, in the end, has similar market value (mle or slightly above as a spot starter/sixth man type). he'd have to have a LOT of trust in the FO to forego a full MLE offer next year, much less anything more. now, most teams don't have space next year or need to use it secure their own guys, but a few bad teams have money to burn. i'd feel better about our odds if he got the mini MLE instead of nunn, as the one-year difference between salaries would be smaller, and early bird rights would help recoup some of that in the next contract. one possibility would be to use the mini-MLE on monk next year, though, which would give us early bird and only short him about 5 million from his likely offers. but then you don't have that to use to shore up any other roster issues, of which there are many (and our whole team will be FAs again!). side note: if nunn doesn't get moved, i'll be curious to see if we try a kcp-lite route with him (bring him back on minimum whilst gaining early bird). that's a long way off but is a potentially good thing for the team.
depends on a lot of factors. if he ends up basically missing the full year (i haven't ruled that out), i could totally see it. basically reverse his and monk's contracts, and you've got early bird on both the following year, which will be useful because that's when our cap sheet is basically empty again. they'd have low cap holds, which could maximize our FA flexibility and allow us to go sign them last at competitive rates. this is definitely the sort of thing rob does/thinks about.
Hopefully this goes a long way toward keeping Malik next year if other clubs offer more. But if best we can do is mini mid-level and someone doubles or more .... likely goodwill only goes so far. Malik Monk reveals no team wanted him in free agency besides Lakers https://www.yahoo.com/sports/malik-monk-reveals-no-team-150042787.html
It just wasn't a shooting guard market just like when we first got KCP. The SG market will decide the salaries.
I honestly don’t see how at least a couple of teams won’t offer him much more than the mini- mid level we could. Maybe he’s different and really won’t take the bag from another suitor if we give him the wink-wink Klutch deal. I sure hope he decides to stay because he’s got so much talent, can fit in with any type of offense, and heats up faster than a NBA Jam player.
Him, Bron and AD can be a trio of elite scoring efficiency. Russ needs to focus on just setting those guys up.
ok hear me out. i think svtzr was suggesting somewhere that russ could opt out and be signed at a smaller amount for a longer period of time. IF russ was willing to do something similar to chris paul and maybe take a 3 year deal for 75 million instead of his one year at 47 million next year (preferably with a partial guarantee on that third year), that 22 million in savings probably makes it possible to offer monk the full MLE without hard capping us. i'd have to do more math, but it seems possible.
Check out those handles, he was putting on a dribbling display out there. I think this kid could average over 20 with the green light all game. He got a nice skill set.
That was my train of thought. You have to assume no one trades for Russ at close to $50m. And Lebron, AD and Russ’ contracts kind of hamstring us from doing any other moves. So the question becomes, do you sign Russ for $25-$30m over 3 years? With the aim of bringing in another good player or two from the savings in his contract. The downside being you have Russ for an extra 2 years… or do you hope he opts out and signs elsewhere (extremely low possibility) or do you just cop the single extra year if he opts in and make your peace with it. Becsuse Lebron is getting up in age I probably resign Russ to have one last run with it. Resign Malik and try to get someone else too if it’s a possibility.
We will have to see how it all plays out. The playoffs are going to determine what happens with Monk. If he shines, I'm sure we are going to do our best to keep him. If his shot goes MIA, maybe not. As for Russ, that dude is going to retire a Laker. I imagine opting out, and resigning for a longer deal at less money, was the plan anyway, when he forced his way out of Washington.
