I think the decision had more to do with keeping the other owners happy. I'm sure Jeanie and Rob work within a predetermined budget. Unlike the other teams with trillionaire owners.
The Buss Family owns 66% of the Lakers. Owners of the remaining 34% expect their investment to return profit, as do some of the Buss brothers that have little interest in basketball and would probably sell their share if they could.
Oh …. other owners of the Lakers. Thought you meant around the league. Yes that does make sense that could be involved here.
Sorry but not buying that at all. They have the majority of shares, they can make all the decisions and if the other owners aren't happy, so what? The cannot force Jeannie to do anything. This is 100% on the Buss family, Jeannie in particular.
Well there's that million or billionaire Dr from the pharmaceutical industry that holds a large chunk too, though still minority size. AEG? Anyway, there could be something to that line of thinking. It may not totally be just Jeanie "cheaping out". She takes after Dr. Buss and saw him operate all those years and he entrusted her over the rest of the family. None of us really know; it's all speculation anyway.
You're assuming every owner share the same enthusiasm towards basketball. There were reports back 3-4 years ago that Johnny and Jim Buss wanted to sell their share. Each of the Buss sibling hold 11% of Lakers share, and if Jeanie don't keep them happy they could sell their shares, making the Buss family minority owners. "Hey Johnny, we can only pay you $6 million instead of the your usual $10 million this year because we had to pay $40 million (with luxury tax) to Alex Caruso" is a good way to make her unenthusiastic siblings upset.
Obviously I haven’t seen the actual Buss trust papers but I thought it was reported the Jerry set it up that so they will always be majority owners. It’s more likely that if some of the Buss children should want to sell in the future, the family is the only ones who can buy the shares.
.... man he still gets audiences so pumped up and that s*** is contagious for the team .... just because his style of play and capabilities are such a joy to watch. It's riveting and yeah we lost that. A true fan favorite who delivers consistently in so many high IQ, highly important ways.
Yep. This one move put me in a crap mood about the entire season before it even started. And now as it has played out, we basically have a team that pretty much exemplifies the polar opposite of Caruso's character and intangibles.
it's sort of emblematic of why we're bad this year. eagle wouldn't have solved everything, but it's just obvious we didn't understand what made us successful. two really good stars and a bunch of guys who play hard and know their roles is better than two and a half stars and a bunch of aging mercenaries.
