honestly, beal may be a bigger score than dame when you factor in age. but yeah, i guess dream big.

i also wonder how much they coordinated with rob. the story says derozan felt like one group didn't know what the other was doing.

by nba rules this is pretty important to say, as if rob was coordinating with guys as they conducted meetings with impending FAs, we'd be in big trouble.

anyway, i doubt rob was totally in the dark about these conversations and meetings, but he can't say otherwise.

Good read. Good to know that Dame and Beal were the main targets, albeit pipe dreams.
I am surprised that Derozan got as far as negotiating a trade. Thought that was a rumor that popped up AFTER the Westbrook trade as a discount free agent signing.

Bron is a hell of a recruiter. People want to play with him and he makes them feel welcome. I am not sure where we would be if he hadn't joined.... you know, when no one else wanted to.

Treadmill team at best, and would be unable to even keep all our young players. Yeah, he definitely brought us back and won the championship for us. Dude delivered, no question about it. We'll see what happens once he retires.

Lakers have a history of getting the elite player. If LeBron doesn't come to LA in 2019, it's likely Kawhi and George are Lakers right now. Lakers would have had someone here regardless.

I feel for Derozan (I mean not too much that is a huge contract in Chicago for him). Coming home to LA and winning a title would have been a nice way to put the Toronto days and the deal with Kawhii behind him. He really helped that franchise comes into it's own even more then VC it felt that Toronto had arrived rather then just a star. Then he gets booted for Kawhii and the team he helped establish went on to a win a title.

Oh well it is what it is

Can’t lie, I did have a soft spot for the DeRozan and Lowry Raptors.

i'm not sure about that. both george and leonard had opportunities to take firmer stances and force their way here, and each had a chance to sign as a UFA, too.

it's possible, but before lebron, we'd been turned down by lots of b-listers and couldn't even get meetings with the top guys.

Exactly. People forget how miserable we were just a few years ago. I remember when therealdeal started the thread about Bron coming over like one year before and basically all of us were like, "yeah right". Before LBJ decided to join, there seemed to be next to no interest from other stars in doing so.

i don't think i had an inkling of belief he'd come here until about a couple weeks out, iirc.

i feel like we were in real danger of becoming the knicks, who also thought their brand would carry them regardless.

Come on. The Knicks have sucked for almost 50 years. Lakers got railroaded by a piece of s*** commissioner and had their icon retire in 2016. Two years later, they got LeBron. Every little downturn resulted in Kareem, Shaq or LeBron after a few years with the Lakers.

Don't forget too, they drafted really well. If it was any other team, the team would have been patient and would have had a very good team. Maybe not a title team, but good.
