Pets are always family, but after 19 years they are legitimately like a family member because they are always there, I’m sorry trodgers.
My poor 6 year old was diagnosed with lymphoma. It's treatable, but not curable. I wouldn't mind people praying for my little dude. My wife and I can't have kids so he's like our son. 2020 just being 2020 I guess.
Very nice! You say that's about 200 gallons? Are you running a sump? Love that powder blue and yellow, tangs are so cool. I'm getting together everything to start a 400 gallon. Sump is gonna be 160 gallons with a refugium and a frag area. Reef Savvy is building a custom tank, I can't even believe that I'm actually pulling the trigger but it's always been a dream to put together a full blown reef tank. How long have you had yours up and running? Is this your first saltwater aquarium? I've never had saltwater myself but I've had tanks since I was a kid with a 120 gallon being my biggest. Are you using a quarantine tank?
Not my first tank. It's 180 gallons with a 55 gallon sump and an auto-top off of 17 gallons. Just don't skimp on equipment or even live rock. Set it up properly the first time and within a year, it will be it's own ecosystem where the maintenance will be minimal, especially at 400 gallons. A tank that size should be VERY stable if set up properly.
Are you running a quarantine tank? Have you had any problems with your tangs getting ich/fluke/velvet. I know they're super finicky and one of the easiest fish to acquire some of those problems but damn I love them. Any plans on more fish in your future or corals?
No quarantine tank. I used to have one, but after leaving fish in there for over a month, and then putting them in the main tank only to see them get ick like 3 days later, I failed to see the point. I buy fish from the store (NEVER PETCO) after watching them for a couple weeks. I had a couple tangs get ick, but if you just feed them healthy food and keep the water parameters good, they will usually kick it pretty quick. Ick is always going to be present in your tank. The main thing is to keep the stress of the fish at a minimum, feed them healthy foods (frozen fortified with spirulina algae) and ick will never break through. The couple times a tang came down with it, it never jumped to my other fish.
Have you checked out Marine Collectors? They quarantine all their fish for 14 days, make sure they're eating good and are healthy as they can possibly be. Their prices are a bit higher but for peace of mind when you're already substantially invested is worth it imo. Where did you purchase your live rock from? I have an overall idea drawn up for how I want to aquascape but I'm going to need tons of rock. Are you using aragonite sand?
Please don't. I LOVE marine aquariums. Can't afford one but still love to read and look at them. Continue here
Damn. We had Zoe put down today. I'm bad at math and remembering things, but she we had her since 2016. She was almost 16 - would have been in June. Brutal. Was the right call, and I'm totally at peace with the decision. But I had Zoe since before I began my PhD work - and I've now been a professor for more than a decade. Rest in Peace, baby.
In far cheerier news, in August of 2021, we got two cats. The woman who lived across the street from my brother (in PA) had kittens. Wife saw them. Wanted two immediately. So, Auggie (Augustus) and Octavia are our newest babies.
Dang, thought you had experiments going on for a minute. :Vogelshocked: I’m in need of getting a great car right now. Don’t have a great place for a dog yet.
