Definitely damage control. Agents probably telling him to say all the right things in case we don’t get those big offers from other teams.
Not saying it was the right thing to do. Dennis has always come off the bench and that’s his best use IMO. I think we were also looking to lighten Lebron’s ball handling duties during the season.
This. I don't like Dennis, but what is our alternative? It's similar to the KCP situation. We were capped out. We weren't going to find someone for the league minimum that was better than KCP (or anywhere close to his level), and KCP/Klutch knew that so we overpaid for a mediocre, streaky shooter. I think Dennis will have us over a similar barrel. We'll overpay since letting him walk will only leave us the MLE or league minimum to fill his void. I will say this though. If we choose to keep Dennis and let Caruso walk since we spent too much money on Dennis, I will have an aneurysm. Resigning Caruso and THT should be Priority A and 1A. Then with Dennis locked up, we start Caruso/KCP/Lebron/AD/The Corpse of Marc Gasol and bring Dennis off the bench.
How much they pay Dennis won't affect how much they pay Caruso unless they don't want to pay the luxury tax. And if the luxury tax is a problem, I would be extremely frustrated as a Lakers fan. Lakers is pumping out $ and the franchise value skyrocketed to $5 billion. The last thing they should be worried about is the luxury tax when they have LeBron James+AD on the roster trying to compete for a title.
denis was a starter in Atl, he came off bench cause of Westbrook then cp3, he wont come off bench for a Caruso
The bench minutes don't really matter as much because you could always sub players in-and-out. I think the issue with Schroder is he just completely abandoned any resemblance of a three point shot. When you start pumpfaking a wide open three, then you have no confidence at all. Someone like Schroder will get 30 minutes regardless. I think the bench minutes discussion would make a lot more sense for a player like Trezz. Someone who gets 25 minutes per game and dominates your secondary rotation.
which is why he might get sprewell-ed. yeah, clearly the aberration. he didn't make the jason terry leap i was hoping to see.
Honest question since I don’t follow other rosters closely, who’s starting PG position is he going to take on any other team for over the money he turned down here, or leaving money out if he has to eat crow and now take less than he turned down ... elsewhere?
nobody. dallas, chicago, and ny all have semi-vacancies at his spot and some money to spend, but i doubt any of them pony up the kind of cash he turned down. i think his recent comments reflect that he's realized he may have to come back to the table with his hat in hand. though one could argue both his and rob's comments point at trying to keep a S&T alive, which is best for both parties.
i really don't see it. unless it's a 2-year deal or less. we were saved from ourselves when he turned down our offer.
If they won't pay the luxury tax then it means they do not have the cash flow to support a long term goal. The money they are making is in asset value not in operations. the Buss family is not super wealthy. They live on the income generated by this team. Literally, their whole family lives off of it. If that dried up for, let's say 5 years, they would likely be fairly devastated economically. They are going to need to look hard at the situation and decide, if and when, it is time to sell. We need an owner with deep pockets who can cope with and realize a long term goal with end game profits. Nobody should own a sports franchise for that long. 20-40 years at most, maybe if you have multi-generational money and you have a child that has it in their genes to continue but if the money is not there, they should sell. Of course, that will be the end of an era and a sad ending because it has been one of the best era's in sports.
if they haven't been able to parlay their ownership into incredible wealth in other arenas, i feel like they're doing it wrong? in other words, i don't buy that they're going to go belly-up from the luxury tax like they're running a hardee's during the pandemic or something.
