As expected. He'll be rusty, but he should be a huge help nevertheless.

AD with Dennis and Drum should be interesting. KCP and Kuz defending wings.

Like that half court on offense. But transition D and cross-matches? Not sure. Also want to see him with Trez when Ben and KCP space for them.

Man I don’t like the sound of that...

I’m going to trust our medical staff and AD himself that he’s now healthy and ready to go with minimized long-term risks, and so I’m excited he’s coming back. But I can’t lie, I’m going to be nervous watching him play for a while.

Yes. Very nervous. That KD dance in the hall - obvious he was testing it out himself - only to see Toronto deploy a “make him plant and drive strategy” and then tear his Achilles when Ibaka forced him to drive...

I fear the Jalen Rose punks...

Once again, an Achilles tendon will dictate a career. Kevin Durant is having massive set backs from it. Kobe's career ended. If he feels he may rip it again when he starts playing, might be best to keep him out and sacrifice the title this year to keep him from ruining his career and ruining the Lakers for the future. It is a terrible reality but a necessary one if the Achilles is weak.

yeah, i think i said it weeks ago: seemed to me this always a serious achilles scare. the question now is whether any scare basically means you're going to tear it eventually, or if there's things that rest and PT can do to prevent it.

i imagine other clubs' training/medical staff will be watching this one closely, too.

my first instinct is like ox's: let him sit the whole year and sacrifice short term for long term. but the more i think about it, you might just be delaying the inevitable in any case. you have to try to play some time. he's been out a good while--long enough that rest shouldn't be the factor that determines re-injury. could just be structural/long-term use issue.

Dallas will dare him to drive - use explosive moves. And try to pin him in the paint for some physical play. Just like Toronto did to KD. Test him.

I still think Joker stuck his foot out to hit AD’s foot or make his exert the calf like you do when you are falling forward and trying to keep your balance.

But any basketball move can stress this sort of injury. KD did his landing after a fadeaway. Kobe - on a push move trying to get past Barnes. Still, though I hate trying to ask guys to play soft, safe, and tentative, I hope he does just that until he gets some games in.

Ok... now I’m more worried. When I saw Ox commenting, I thought it was going to be something like “Y’all wusses worry too much, he’ll be fine” :D

But yeah, 100% agree. If there’s any long term risk or he feels setbacks just shut him down.

Like abeer said though, I guess it depends on the nature of the injury. Is it at a point where further rest will help? Or is it something structural that he’ll always be at risk for despite any rest, and so we just have to live with it and play him? Or maybe we ARE overreacting and it’s a benign calf thing that won’t increase his risk of a major Achilles injury ... (probably wishful thinking)

I think the main thing for me will be watching how he moves. My hope is that the only lingering symptoms we might see are all conditioning/stamina related. But if that’s not the case, and he’s lost explosiveness or changing his gait because he’s not confident in planting that Achilles, that would be very concerning and a sign that we need to pull him out.

I felt a similar "ripping" pain once but after a couple of months staying off of it (and no tears, thankfully), I felt a lot better and had no lingering pain or problems. It's been 6-7 years now and I'm almost 40. Just being hopeful that the "ripping" isn't as bad as it sounds.

    "ripping sensation"

LT's version can feel great, a release of built of pressure. But AD's version?

    That sounds below average

I'm not a doctor but what evidence is there that if AD sits for a longer period of time that this 'ripping' sensation will go away? For all we know, it could be a freakish incident that just needed some time and the Lakers took extra precaution due to that. At some point, there will always be a risk of AD getting injured that won't have anything to do with the duration of rest. He mentioned signing that long-term contract as a security measure because of his health concerns. I highly doubt AD wasn't aware of some sort of lingering issue regarding his body. There's really nothing you can expect at this point other than that he's healthy enough. I'm not advocating for AD to play if he is obviously in pain and there is evidence that playing is too risky under his current health but he has the best access to the best medical staff in the world. I trust their diagnosis regardless of what ends up happening with AD and the reality of the situation is AD is injury prone so there's nothing you can really do regarding that.

Just guessing a lot of MRI’s monitoring the healing process of the micro tears we read about going on when tendinosis was being talked about. Or the calf muscle, as per seemingly a later shift in how they chose to describe the injury. Once those tears show as being healed then they could start the physical strengthening and rehabbing to attempt to make the area stronger going forward hopefully than it was prior to the injury?

If he feels good and the doctors cleared him then I'm not worried. If this is something that is going to be a problem for him in the future, it's going to be a problem this year or next year... but it's going to happen eventually. I certainly hope the injury is fully healed and it's not going to be bothering him much anymore. Basically, I simply decided not to worry about it.

    Let's win some games!
