The huge difference is last season, he came off the bench playing for a team with no title hopes so the expectations weren't high. When you play for the Lakers and are starting, people are expecting you to be performing as a high level player. I would rather he come off the bench and the Lakers put Caruso in the starting lineup.

i think dallas and chicago are also both possibilities for schroder. he could fit pretty well in dallas as a starter because luka does most of the actual pg work (like lebron here), so his flaws (he's not a pg) aren't as magnified. still, though, i'm not sure they wouldn't rather play big and just use brunson as their only small guard.

but at some point you have to draw a line to where it's a contract that hurts the team. this isn't okc being stupid about paying harden. schroder is 28 years old and an 8 year vet. we know who he is and isn't. 4/84 is already an overpay. you won't be able to move off that deal without giving up extra. we haven't been signing guys to deals like that, and we won't start with him.

oh, and to agree with others: he's a bench player. it worried me that he didn't accept it, and it could be a problem going forward. i was hoping for him to go late career jason terry and embrace his role as a very important scoring guard off the bench, but maybe that's not going to happen.

now that contract negotiations have stalled, i'd say we do whatever's best for us, including trying him off the bench when everyone gets back.

I think the FO is thinking they can get THT and Caruso for less than 20 a year total or about 20 and that right there is a full complement of PGs who aren't true PGs offensively, more like wings with passing ability but great guarding PG's on the other end. Both are bigger and longer than Schroder and can slide to other positions defensively. Both will be better next year. Especially THT. That works for the Lebron era though afterwards, a true PG will have to be found on a vet min or exception or something.

But I think we should all get used to the idea of Schroder elsewhere next season. And though I hate to do this, maybe it's better if we keep playing THT in garbage time mostly, I'm not keen on pumping up his value for this off-season

Great post. I agree with almost everything, I'm just not sure about that "THT in garbage time," because we actually need his scoring... but everything else is spot on IMO.

yeah, another instance where being in the room would help. but if negotiations are really icy, we can bench this dude.

and before someone comes at me with my player relations concerns re: gasol:

schroder's been a problem elsewhere. gasol hasn't. we offered schroder a big deal and he declined. twice. he can sit. caruso's a better basketball player and THT will be in the long run.

Gasol's still worth having around, a great guy and teammate, great tips to players, he can come in for the bench if the offense is stagnant, say they have trezl's number. Could even play with trezl. Wouldn't compare situations with Gasol. If there had been some killer PG available for a buy-out and we picked them up could you imagine the fit Schroder would have?

This is gonna be like what happened with Lamar Odom around 2009. He's gonna not resign then go out and find this covid market doesn't want him and have to take even less than what was offered from us. When he comes back knocking on Rob's door, Rob's gonna say "Allow me to channel the great Kobe Bryant: You don't want to be here? then GTFO"

He thinks he’s worth more than 20 mil per year and he goes out and has games like this? 8/7 on 3-12? He’s good, but he’s delusional if he thinks that’s his market worth.

he is gambling on our inability to replace him

    check https://nba.nbcsports.com/2021/03/3...four-year-84m-contract-extension-from-lakers/

"If Schroder leaves, the Lakers would still be capped out. His departure might open the door for them to use the non-taxpayer mid-level exception (projected to be worth $9,535,740) rather than the taxpayer mid-level exception (projected to be worth $5,889,540). But that probably wouldn’t get them a player as good as Schroder."

Depends on who is available and if we can sign them with a substantial raise the next season??? I think a lot of good players would take that $9,535,740, if they knew they could get a huge raise and a ring from it. You know, I like DS as a player but I am somewhat resigned to the fact that we may lose him for nothing. We will think twice about trading assets for guys like him in the future.

debatable, obviously someone not as young but DS isn't a good fit we can find a solid vet that can do a specific duty we're looking for

I'll take Rose, AC, and THT every day of the week over Dennis. If that's his agent's play, they've drastically underestimated Rob, Bron, and Klutch. Ideally I'd like to keep him, but nowhere near his price point.

Dragic might be available for MLE. He'll be 35 by May and Miami might want to keep Oladipo instead.

Devote Graham could look awesome with LAL with his shooting. Hornets have a glut of PG types so Id keep an eye on him if DS decides to bail

We’re the 29th ranked offense since Lebron’s went out and he wants more than $21 mill? Delusional.

Smart money is on THT making another step. That and AC would negate whatever Dennis thinks he is bringing to the table.
