What was the old rule? What changed? Is it only the marquis games they care about?

I imagine they'll largely look at the previous game. If they looked fine in that one and didn't have any plays or collisions they came up gimpy in, they'll push them to play to protect their TV money (especially in back to back shortened seasons). They could say adrenaline was in full gear, so they didn't feel it till after the game or it happened in practice or they slept wrong, so it definitely will be difficult to prove.

I guess Pop’s, being old excuse for Tim Duncan won’t work for the league anymore.

yeah. i twisted it on the curb in front of my house after the game. i woke up and it was sore; don't know why. you can make me play...are you liable if my injury worsens? do you pay my salary plus damages? i have very good lawyers.

still, though, is the doctor supposed to say the mri disagrees with your subjective feeling of pain in your foot, thus you must play? even if that were considered sensible, wouldn't a good strategy be continually awaiting mri results that would take until after the game against the kings occurred?

this is all just posturing. they can't do anything, and they're asking teams not to force their hand into...something they know they don't want to (or can't) do.

my read on it is that they've been asking nicely for the past couple years, and organizations haven't taken them seriously. but everyone on both sides knows there's nothing that can or will be done. if they're serious about it, the league will garnish tv money that goes to teams when marquee players sit for big national games when it's not part of a long stretch of time on IR. but i'm pretty sure there's no language in the CBA regarding that, nor can they just put it in now.

if organizations and individual players can lose money on these decisions, they'll end immediately.

The players are the product. If they are able, they should be playing.

it's an interesting question. is it really the players who are making these choices? maybe in kawhi's case it is, but i feel like san antonio made a concerted effort as an organization to plan the load management. and lots of teams have emulated it. thus, the franchises themselves see it in their own best interest to rest players when they're not injured.

to me, this means there's something wrong with your reward system. the quickest conclusion is that regular season games aren't important enough. so how do you make them more important? have fewer of them and maybe make them even more valuable in the playoffs somehow? maybe there can be optional re-seeding at the choice of the team with the best record after each round? maybe award bonuses from an escrow account of sorts that will be delivered on a descending basis directly to players based on team record? obviously, there are problems with these, but it beats threatening...something(?)...if you rest healthy players (unproveable) for televised regular season games.

Interesting concept, but then you have so many teams who don’t really care if they make the playoffs. Those teams would have no incentive to play along if they have no shot at the playoffs. There’s no penalty, and it’s actually better for them if they sit their best players for a worse seeding and better draft position.

I think one of the ways you cut down on resting healthy players is by shortening the season. Of course less games equals less money for owners and players. Owners may or may not sign off on that but no way players do. So if their not willing to give up money, then they should play if able.

but are those typically the teams about whom we're worrying with respect to load management? if the kings sit de'aaron fox, does anyone even notice? and i think the most recent fixes to the lotto odds have helped tanking a bit, tbh. being historically terrible and having a chance to pick 6th is pretty frightening.

i wonder what the math is for having a play-in round for the playoffs (like wildcards in football and baseball and a little like what the nba did in the bubble) to offset shortening the regular season? they say they make a lot more cash off the playoff games, right? is another mini-round worth trimming 6-10 games off the regular season?

Good idea. I have no clue about the money part. I got the feeling the players didn’t initially like the play around for the 8th seed in the bubble but maybe it was just the 8th seed that didn’t like it.
