This definitely was not what I was hoping for, but I’m not going to get too down on this for several reasons: 1 We still have a championship contending team led by Lebron and AD. For me that outshines this signing significantly. 2 we have strong personalities that can keep his ego in check if he decides to act out. And 3 if he does act out and not do his job, we can cut bait just as easily and move on. Which I hope the front office does if and when that time comes. Were there more desirable options? Sure. But like it was mentioned, he’s still got some game left. To quote Star Wars: “ (He) May yet be of some use to us.” Anyway it is what it is. I just hope Dwight realized he needs us way more than we need him.
You know what's funny? That most people on forums like ReamGM who are not Laker fans think this is a good move. "He still has athleticism, will block some shots, huge get, low risk high reward move, Dwight will surprise people" type of thing. I am not used to that at all. Usually they hate everything we do, good or bad. Maybe they are just jinxing us.
Might as well get Rodman and Vlade back, as long as they're bringing in players long after their usefulness has been exhausted.
Every time I think of Howard, I think of this... People don't really change. He's a piece of crap. He better stay in line or he will get drop kicked in his sensitive arse.
Clipps 3 big man are solid already, that rookie they bought rights to could be an even better ver. of Montrez, all he does is catch lobs and blocks everything in sight, I wouldn't be surprised if he surpasses Zu this season for starting role with todays modern O.
Yuck. I would have much preferred Faried or Noah. Dwight sucks. Well, at least McGee has a backup now I guess. If Howard acts like a jerk though I hope they can him quick. Seems like a bit of a desperate move to me, however. Hopefully Lebron, Rondo and AD can keep this knucklehead in check. He's a hard one to root for.
Btw, this is a NON-Guaranteed contract. He has to work hard in training camp to make the roster. Not sure why are there are so many doubters. If he sucks, he won't make the roster, pretty simple.
This would be my rebuttal Once again the Lakers go for a “name” over a possible better option, like Faried or Noah. He’s clearly not the best option when we have to go the non-guaranteed route and worry if he’ll even make it through training camp without pissing enough people off to get booted from the roster.
I actually would feel better if we sign Noah as well. We need the depth at center regardless. There’s no way McGee/Dwight play all 82 games. We would have to cut someone to make the roster spot for Noah... Dudley? Lol what a life. He makes $2 mil for nothing.
Dwight is team chemistry poison. He has been in literally every team he’s played with. You don’t just get rid of the poison and expect everything to be fine. We’d have to recover from the negative influence and as Weezy said, we missed the opportunity to sign players that don’t have Dwight’s terrible chemistry killing history.
I wasn’t sold on Noah or Speights as being anything special. Dwight has a higher ceiling if he can stay healthy and fall in line. If he doesn’t, you cut him. If Noah or Speights are gone by then, so what? You just need a big body to give you 6 fouls and some physicality. Koufos, Sejri, Mozgov, and dozens of other players would be able to provide that if Dwight doesn’t work out, and Noah/Speights are not significantly better than any of them. It also sounds like AD wanted this. So given that this whole center situation is heavily based on us wanting to appease AD and save his body the wear and tear of playing the 5 in the regular season, I think it makes sense to go with the guy AD signs off on. Also not sure why we’re making a big deal out of the non-guaranteed contract. It’s a smart move and we’d have probably gone that route with any of the options we were looking into. Because none of them were particularly great and worth locking in guaranteed money for, as evidenced by the fact that nobody else wants them. Using the non-guaranteed nature of Dwight’s contract to argue that Dwight wasn’t a good choice just doesn’t make sense.
