How are you "tampering" in a free agent pitch tho?

By that line of thought, Rob can't be there either. Morey would have a 100 yard restraining perimeter when free agency opens up.

Also its reported that Uncle Dennis and Magic are friends.... couldn't Magic be there as part of Kawhi's camp, giving an admonishing gaze anytime Rob spoke? Haha

This just keeps getting better. This is what actual scrambling looks like. First, Kawhi is an amazing player, but he didn’t slay the Warriors, KD’s achilles and Klay’s knee did, and the Raptors STILL only won game 6 by a point. Second, “the Clippers with Kawhi look like the Raptors with Kawhi”. Uh, what? The Clippers have the equivalent of Lowry, Siakam, Gasol, Ibaka, and VanVleet? News to me. This narrative is hilarious, “we thought the narrative was the Clippers and the Raptors, my goodness, where did this plucky little team called the Lakers come from? Wild!”. [IMG] Lastly, f*** Woj and his somber face whenever he talks about us in any positive light, and then how it lights back up when he starts to spin our positives as negatives. I wanted Kawhi so we can win titles, but now I also want him so I can bathe in Woj tears for the rest of his career.

It could theoretically be tampering in the league's eyes because he's been communicating with Kawhi and Uncle Dennis informally for some time now (according to the reporting) which is of course fine since he's not a member of the organization. But if you have him there at the pitch meeting, then he's basically a quasi/de facto member of the organization, even if it's not official or on paper. This would really blur the lines set in place to prevent tampering. And I could see the league thinking that allowing a PBO to leave a team, immediately start selling soon-to-be free agents on the team, and then participate in the official team pitch meetings sets a bad precedent, and undermines all the anti-tampering protections already in place. And since the league is a private organization that's allowed some discretion in the way it protects its institutions, the commissioner can craft policy like this on the fly and say, "sorry Magic. This would be damaging to the league and would suggest that it's open-season on tempering going forward."

Oh how I’ve missed Stephen A freaking out over the possibility of Lakers dominance. I’m trying not to get too excited right now, but the media is making it difficult. Hard to buy that this was Magic’s 3 year plan all along though, he’d have to be some kind of super genius that got in good with Klutch years ago to get LeBron here and then get AD to demand a trade, that’s Bond villain type stuff.

As others have pointed out, many other Teams have had ex-Players as part of their Free Agent pitches before.. Not sure why this is an issue now...?

Just beat me to it. :D

I totally understand this. Can Kawhi get dinner with Magic? Is that allowed?

Since this is the case, maybe Magic can not immediately go to the press about such reports that pop up? You know, just for once, say “no comment”.

“Magic could not be part of any recruiting efforts in free agency.”

So he can’t be in meetings but he can still make a phone call outside of the meeting right? Casually bump into said free agent and grab dinner with them right?

Lebron should just invite everyone to have cameos in Space Jam 2. “Oh we’re filming all the scenes today, at the same time? What a councidence.”

The point is it's legal to pitch someone at that time whether you are a member of the organization or not. That is why he said that following that line of logic would mean Pelinka would also not be able to pitch Kawhi. If you are saying that by being there, it retroactively makes Magic tampering for speaking to Kawhi and his camp prior to free agency I understand however that is just beyond ridiculousness and Magic would have a very easy case in arbitration. Being somewhere does not make you a part of an organization even if it is in support of it.

I don't think you're wrong. But the league can do what it wants, in part, because something like this would never go to arbitration. If the league says "don't be there or we will retroactively deem your communications to be tampering," it's not worth it for the Lakers or Magic to fight that. Just go home and meet with Kawhi somewhere/sometime else.

Oh snap...that would be hilarious if he showed up as part of Kawhi's camp just so they could stick it to the league.
