The sadder thing is Lowry is 33, this is his 13th year, and this is still who he is in the playoffs. Actually he’s been on a steady playoff decline the last 3 seasons, which is even sadder, as you’d think a vet like him would be more solid and less playing like a rookie. We may never see Lonzo in the playoffs as a Laker, but I’d bet he would actually perform better as he seems to get up for the bigger games against the better teams.

Yep, no max...here are the specifics.

IF Kawhi does a 1+1 to get the 35%max from us next year, then just him @ 40.6m (35%max in 2020), Bron, dead Deng and an incomplete roster charge of 10 would be about 94m, giving us 22m in cap space....which is roughly 13m off from AD's true max that summer. And that's with us renouncing everybody. So if we do get Kawhi, we lose some of that leverage of having AD walk into space next summer.

BI being a RFA would be a poison pill contract if we gave him an extension and then traded him. If we had BI agree to a S&t then the deal won't necessarily give him the benefit of bird rights. He would have to agree to a fully guaranteed 3yr min deal so that the new team would gain his bird rights by those 3yrs of service. The only benefit to BI in a S&t is if we trade him to a team that didn't have enough cap to tender him an offer as a RFA. So the trade BI route is hard.

But let's say AD opts into his 28m final year and wants to get moved in order to retain his bird rights, then we only need 22m in outgoing salary to make it so and that's where we can trade our kiddies for AD or renounce nearly all of them and take AD in with the 22m in cap we have and then only needing to send about 3.4m in salary.

The most ideal scenario tho is Kawhi opts in to his final year this summer and gets traded here. Then we follow up that trade with a trade taking in AD with our remaining cap space and only sending BI or Zo out with our top 11 pick. This way we get both Kawhi/AD along with their bird rights...and we get to keep with Zo or BI.

Don't know if Kawhi is a fun guy...but he can ball.

he is flat-out a cold-blooded KILLER in the playoffs.

Great defense, great offense...can't ask for anything else.

If Lowry wasn't a consistent no show, they would have a chance.

Wow...so the opt-in and trade option might be the best thing for all parties...question is...who are we sending back for Kawhi?

And on top of that...who would we be trading for AD?

BTW..this scenario could play out perfectly for us if Kawhi continues to KILL it in the playoffs but his team still loses because Lowry, Gasol and Ibaka all continue to underperform and those 3 collectively make...$80M...wow.

Future picks and/or Bonga, Jones, a minimum kiddie. Toronto is lucky to get anything in return for a guy that can just walk into our space as a max guy. AD is the guy we have to give up real value for.

Why Kawhi would want to make about 21m via opt in instead of 32.7m as a 30%max guy? Cause if he opts in and gets traded, he's eligible for a 35% max of 5yrs 230m next summer. If he walks into our space as a 30%max guy this summer on a 1+1, he's only eligible for a 35%max 4yr 170m deal (cause no bird rights).

We presently have about 38m in cap. If Kawhi opts in and gets traded and AD gets traded this summer their aggregated salary is about 48m. But trade rules doesn't imply we need to send back 10m to make the difference up...in reality, we only have to send back about 5m. Which means Zo or BI don't have to be part of the package for the trade to work. However, I'm sure Griff will want both, but maybe our pick will allow us to keep either Zo or BI out the package. Also I'm assuming AD will waive his 15% trade kicker.

Good call..we could probably send a future pick and Bonga/Wagner/Hart for Kawhi in the S&T.

For AD, I think we'd have to give up both BI and Zo plus the 2019 1st...

Yeah, I'm hoping Griff spares us some kiddies, but how can anyone complain if it's Kawhi, AD and Bron?

Seriously, we would be adding this guy to Bron....

...and, oh yeah, there's still AD.

Don't get me wrong... I love me some BI, but those kiddies gotta go if they in the way of Kawhi/AD.

Not that this is really pertinent to the subject but how exactly does Kawhi get a super max (35%) deal from us since he wasn't drafted by us nor traded to us during his rookie contract? I believe he may only qualify for the regular 30% max.

Super max (ie designated player max) gets you up to a 6yr deal @35% of the cap much earlier in your career once you hit certain benchmarks.

A regular ol max is up to 5 years (with bird rights) and you have to be a 10+ season vet to be eligible for a 35%max. Rookie to 6 yr vets (that are non designated players) can get up to a 25%max and 7-9 yr vets (that are non designated) can get up to a 30% max.

Kawhi with the Spurs was eligible for a supermax last summer (after his 7th season)...but since being traded and losing his player designated status with the Spurs, his 35% max can only be achieved next summer upon starting his 10th season. If he stays with Toronto or opts to opt-in and get traded this summer, he is eligible for a 5yr 35% max deal with 8% escalators (ie 5yr ~230m), due to him retaining his bird rights.

However if he opts out and walks into space this summer, he can sign a 1+1 30%max deal and then opt out next summer to earn a 35% max deal... however with no bird rights, he can only sign a max 4yr deal with 5% annual escalators (ie 4yr ~170m).

    Hope that answers your question.

I see, so the supermax essentially just moves the 7th-9th year player up a tier in pay rate if they meet the other criteria though it also adds that 6th year which when you think about it is a big deal considering how old most these guys would be in that 6th year (minimum of their 13th year) and the likelihood of them getting paid that kind of paper at that age (with 8% increases around 55-56mil ).

Can a team designate more than one player for this? i.e. Klay Thompson & Curry were Klay to get voted in to the all-nba team later this month and qualify?

All this fancy wheeling and dealing assumes a front office capable of such things. Linda hasn’t proven she can do that yet, so I can’t get my hopes up.

Exactly...but the supermax has not worked out like the owners liked.

Boogie got traded before he was eligible. George, Kawhi and Kyrie all wanted out before they could really sign one. AD still wants out of his. So it's really been Harden, Curry, Russ and Wall... And so far Okc and the Wiz appear to be taking some heat for making those players designated.

As for how many a team can have... A team can elect only two designated rookies (25% max) and two designated vets (30% to 35% tier in the 7-9 season category) at any time on one team. However only 1 designated rookie and 1 designated vet can be acquired from another team.

So that last part of the rule is what has limited Boston from trading for AD till Kyrie losses his designated status this summer. Cause if they traded for AD, then they would have had Kyrie and AD as designated players from other teams and only one such player is allowed at one time on a team. Once Kyrie opts out this summer, Boston is free to trade for AD.

George could have gotten more with Okc, but inconceivably didn't. Beal can join Wall with his own supermax. The Dubs can only elect to designate one more vet to join Curry and if it's Klay, Dray can't get a supermax by the Dubs. If Klay isn't offered one, then Dray is still eligible to sign one the following season if he meets certain benchmarks like All-Nba, DPoY, etc.

When it comes to us, we can give our kiddies a 25% designated rookie extension to offer them essentially 6 guaranteed years. BI would be the first one eligible this summer to receive such a deal.

I'm sure I missed a few more examples, but I hope you got the gist of it.
