I was thinking the same thing between him and Giannis, but both those dudes are eligible for a supermax in the coming summers (AD in '19 and Giannis in '20)...plus their current contracts take them thru the summer of 2020...so if they open up cap it's for the UFA draft class of KAT/DLo or the RFA class of Simmons/BI.

But with the current rumored deal for DeRozan, it's in teetering that he had a player option for the 2020/21 season, meaning it fits right in with the Spurs blueprint of players on 2 year deals.

Btw, Walker just signed his rookie deal so he can't be traded for another 30 days and Metu is left unsigned but just broke his wrist in SL, so our will be interesting to see how the Spurs approach Kawhi drags with Metu as filler.

So I dreamed last night that we traded for Kawhi but I woke up before I found out who we sent out.

Good! Again I’m all for it on the Lakers end, I just think it’s a bad gamble for Toronto

Yeah, deal makes sense. We couldn't really compete with that on those terms (established player + young player).

Not to mention Toronto will be more open to trade Kawhi to us now.

I could see Kawhi liking it in Toronto and staying. It’s a beautiful international city where he can blend in. There’s a lot more to do than in San Antonio.

Right. Maybe later in the season they want what we have more than SA did.

If Toronto is willing to do a full reset, they would need expirings and some kids...no? Rob's willing to find out...

Or LA just wants to hold onto all their assets and aim for the #2019lan...greedy bastards haha.

I guess you've never been to Toronto in the winter. It blows. And traffics in the summer suck due to all the construction. I worked there for a year. Even though it's a nice city, it just never feels like home to me.

Interesting thing about Toronto's books...they have 2 upcoming expiring trade exceptions: DeMarre Carroll (11.8m) expires 7/13/18 (tomorrow) and Cory Joseph (6.1m) expires 7/14/18 (2 days from now). Those are huge pieces that can be moved to SA if they are looking to dump salary. They can't dump Mills into the Carroll exception, but they can dump Green's expiring 10M into it. They can also dump Gino's expiring deal into Joseph's TPE.

I wouldn't know why they would if they are in no current danger of paying taxes this season, but still the option is open and it does drop team salary by about 13M for a Spurs team that has ownership going through a divorce. But Toronto is already about 7m above the tax threshold, so this just adds more salary for them resulting in more taxes to be paid.

Toronto also didn't make any picks in this year's draft. So I can see how they may want some current draft picks via trade.

But as it stands, DeMar, OG and Poeltl consist of about 33m in outgoing salary and Kawhi would be about 23M (includes 15% trade kicker) in salary...so no deal, cause it isn't legal. Kawhi traded by himself (with future picks) can only bring in a max of about 29m in incoming salary.

DeMar, OG, Poeltl, Jonas for Kawhi, Pau, White (rookie) + future picks works tho.

Agreed. He's going to freeze his balls off. I lived in upstate NY for 8 years (graduate school and job) and that air is frickin' freezing and it snows a little every day. I could see Toronto from where I lived and it is like you described. It literally and figuratively blows!

I'm not sure they think they can.

But they can flip him at the deadline with renewed value while we are making a playoff push potentially. They get off of Derozan's contract, and get a bit of a roster makeover when they seem to be in cap hell with few options at the moment.

But who know....maybe it's a great fit, and he's embraced in Canada and loves it there.

If Kawhi people really want to get him more exposure, Toronto is the last place he wants to go. Nobody pays attention to that team, except Drake of course.
