At this point, I'm convince Woj sold his soul to ESPN. All aboard the Shams-train now!
Also this makes the next day and a half a lot more interesting.

He actually demanded a trade? Did I miss that somehow?

Two totally different sides of the story from two different sources.

Either way a meeting happened or is happening. I wonder what could be discussed.

Didn’t seem too conflicting to me. Shams story didn’t really say anything other then they met and it was professional. It probably was professional in the sense that they’re not going to get into a yelling match. Kawhi probably professionally expressed his issues with the Spurs and what he wants.

Woj’s story seems to reveal some more new details though. Sounds like a new development that Kawhi actually plans on telling teams that he will sign with LA in 2019. Before this, it was just “Kawhi prefers LA”

He needs to say LAL NOW, trade me there right NOW and nowhere else. This I’ll sign in 2019 is great until Paul George part 2 happens again. Take all their leverage away and the competitors.

How does that work though? Saying he’ll sign here in 2019 is the only way to communicate that he wants to go to LAL now.

Not sure if this is legit/recent. Anyone in San Diego recognize this?

So can we confirm that Kawhi didn't get locked in a hotel room by Pop and Timmy?

If he really wants to come here, I’d love to trade for him, but that’s really on the Spurs, and they have no incentive to help him. Also, his threat goes away the first week of July if LeBron and George sign here because then our money is gone. A trade would really need to get done before free agency, likely by the draft to get our pick, and I just don’t see it. That said, IF a reasonable deal can be agreed upon, I go with that, because we can’t get Paul George’d again. It’s better to actually HAVE the star player than to HOPE you sign them in free agency.

One strikes a very confrontational tone and the other is more colloquial. Conflicting may have been a strong word, but I dont think those two takes lineup perfectly. Shams makes it sound way more friendly while Woj, who for maybe the first time?, was flat out wrong on insider info, makes it sound like the two were not friendly at all.

Pretty much sums up how I feel ... I just can’t come to grips with what “a reasonable deal” means.

One hour I’m thinking I’d give up the entire young core to put together the big 3 of Lebron, George, and Kawhi.

The next hour I’m thinking that we shouldn’t trade for him at all because we have multiple guys that have the potential to have Kawhi-esque impact in a few years.

This is what I've maintained throughout this whole Kawhi thing. Couple the above with the fact that Boston may not have to throw something at the Spurs that is all that amazing (i.e. no Tatum, Kyrie, Hayward or even Horford) as they know the Spurs would reject a better offer from us. Do not underestimate what the idea of creating a new monster in the West means to them. Most especially a purple and gold one. For that reason alone they may want to make it real attractive and a low(er) risk for Boston or Philly just to get Kawhi over to the East. And it sends a message that they would like as far as screwing with the Spurs. They can get over a PG & LBJ team as Bron's gonna hit that downward climb sooner or later. Kawhi and PG could dominate for a long time and just the idea that they helped created that would sting too much.

Better to send Kawhi to the East for a low-risk package (no major assets other than picks) but with some decent assets. You betcha Boston/Philly will bite. Lets see Kawhi dominate the East, go to the finals for sure and then leave come '19. That's how I think the Spurs will see it.

I'm sure if the Spurs were to trade Kawhi to the Lakers, they would ask for Brandon Ingram AND Kyle Kuzma with whatever filler they can put in there. Losing Kuzma would suck. Would they take BI, Randle, 25th pick? Who knows.

So do the Spurs actually have any cap space? Because if they didn’t, and there happened to be mutual interested between Julius and SA that could only workout via S&T, that could make things interesting.

He has to tell the Spurs FO/Pop, I’m not signing anywhere but LA. Tell any team that wants me it’s one year and out 100% and I’m going to the Lakers. There is no changing my mind, trade me to LA right now because that’s the only place I want to be. He has to force the issue. The 2019 threat isn’t going to scare everyone away if there isn’t serious statements behind it.

He needs to do enough to depreciate other teams’ offers so that LA has best offer by default. Spurs won’t take a lesser deal IMO.

Lakers are in a bit of a dilemma here. If the Lakers sign PG and Lebron, that takes Kawhi out of the picture in a year. Or am I wrong on that?

Now, if you ask me to choose which way this should go, I would rather sign PG now and if Kawhi is dead set on coming here in a year, wait for Kawhi next year and not sign Lebron. Then the young guys can gel even more. Everyone's hard on for Randle can be fulfilled and the Lakers would just have to dump deng to have the money to sign Kawhi next year. I would rather have a younger player in Kawhi than Lebron. But do you chance it? Not likely the Lakers do that.

Not having obvious cap space is not restrictive to a good GM. Morey finds a way to creatively find cap space almost every year. Make the threat, be adamant about it, and let Pelinka do his job.
