Julius Randle Discussion: MIP

Lakers have already hinted that they aren't paying Randle the max. They want LeBron and PG. Once PG signs July 1, things will get very interesting.

 

if randle get max offers or 20mill+, mgmt only have thrmselves to blame...not just with the non ext. last summer at 12mill/per but also being so transparent with their 2max plan, telling anyone n everyone thatll listen

It's not the Dwight Howard or Pau Gasol situations. Those guys are future hall of famers. Julius Randle is an Anthony Mason ceiling type player. If you lose him for nothing, it won't hurt anyone really. Kuzma is a PF in this style of era anyways. Randle isnt a Center even though some think he can play there.

Julius Randle is an afterthought. The Lakers need A stars to go with their young core. Julius is a 4 year NBA vet with donuts after his name. Overpaying for donuts is the insult.

I used to think that too, but the more I think about our flexibility, I've made my peace with it.

A 12M extension for Jules puts our cap number at 51M heading into the summer. Lets round it up to about 55M with our incomplete roster charges. That leaves us with about 46M in cap space. Not enough room for a maxed out George and Boogie (need 60M in cap), let alone Bron & PG (need 66M in cap). We would be roughly 20M short.

Then consider stretching Deng and that opens up roughly 57M in cap. Again it's not enough to max out PG and Boogie, for the example.

So the only way to create max space is to #DumpDeng.

Under our current position, we have th ability to provide maxs to any combination of 2 players this summer and we don't need the assistance of another team to make it so (ie #DumpDeng).

It's all about options/flexibility and not being at the mercy of other teams to make it so (see Houston and the cap olympics they works have to attempt to bring Bron on board).
