Not so. In college his junior year he shot 32.1% from deep. He had a career average of 30.4% from outside. He shot in the 40% range only the last month he played although from January to March he shot 38.6% from deep. Still, three months out of a three year career would seem like a hot streak to most scouts probably.
But your lumping all his 3's together with these numbers. I mean I just trust this guy who, all he does is analysis on basketball and a large part of the Lakers.
Gotcha. Fair enough. I'd like to know where he gets his numbers from, what the sample size was on that, and what each shot looked like. Was he walking into the shot? Was he setting himself up? That stat by itself, there's no way to even know what that means if I'm an NBA scout.
people are asking how he slipped. he was a 30% three point shooter in college; that's how he slipped. honestly, demonstrating that he hit at a higher rate from nba distance in college would have made me MORE skeptical at the time. guarantee that was a small sample. the larger sample indicated he was a mediocre (at best) shooter. happily for us, it turns out he wasn't. but i wouldn't be firing my scouts for missing that. just like i wouldn't fire my scouts for passing on kawhi leonard in the top 5 of his draft. nobody he knew he'd shoot like this. the spurs didn't even know; they've said as much. edit: i will say that kuzma's mechanics are nice for someone with his %s in college. look at a still of him at release--looks excellent.
Those are all good questions and the sample size probably wasn't a whole lot, guessing 10-20 attempts. Edit: Looks like someone asked and he answered:
See as a scout what am I doing with that really? I mean it sounds nice and all and it's one of those things that you can retroactively look to and say "see??" but I'd bet there's dozens, maybe hundreds, of kids who shoot well in that sample size in college from NBA distance.
I don't like to toot my own horn, but just sayinz. He needs to either start or be the 1st one off the bench for us to have a chance.
Get in line with the dates on tooting your horn (I'm thinking) Was first post before first Utah clips showed up here? If not, how long after. Guess I could go to the start of the thread and check but you're doing the tooting.
If Kuz consistently puts up this level of play, I wouldn't hesitate to move Randle/Nance in a trade to move Deng. And, take a shooter back at that.
tooting sometime precedes pooping, and both smell awful therefore, no tooting plz but if he sucks later, he'll totally get the Anthony Brown treatment. Spoiler
All I know is, even if his shooting somehow falls off a cliff, he’s STILL a smarter and better all-around player than Randle, with a much better feel for the game. If this keeps up, there is no reason Randle deserves to start over Kuzma other than some stupid seniority rule.
I'd go with Lopez, Kuzma, Ingram, KCP and Ball. Not a lot of defense, but the ball will move and we'd score. Let Randle and Clarkson fight each other with 2nd unit for shots until we can pawn them off.
