I don't think so. Randle certainly isn't great either at this stage, but the things I imagine Luke wanting to do with a small ball lineup when it is running the way it's supposed to... Randle or Nance will be the guy to use for the 5. I don't think Black has the foot speed to stay with guards.
Tarik would be the better small ball center. Problem with Randle as a center is he provides zero help defense. His awareness is non-existent.
Walton made an appearance on Bleacher Report’s “Open Run” podcast, where he said he’s having Ingram try to learn from a “similar” player in his former player with the Golden State Warriors and college teammate, Andre Iguodala: “With our young kid, Brandon Ingram, I pulled him up to the office yesterday, and I had our video guy pull 40 clips of Andre playing one-on-one defense, the way he mirrors the ball, because they have similar body types. The long arms, they’re skinny, but strong and athletic at the same time. “So I just showed clip after clip of the way Andre defends one-on-one, because Brandon right now, at his young age, has a tendency to keep his hands down. In the NBA, you can’t do that. In college it works because people can’t score. At this level, if you have a hand down, like Mark Jackson says on his telecasts all the time, ‘hand down, man down.’ At this level, that’s going to be a bucket, so I just wanted him to see the visual, and I have the type of relationship that if he had questions about what Andre is doing, I’d feel comfortable calling Andre up and putting the two of them on the phone, and letting them talk.” That process may already be underway. Ingram revealed in an appearance on “The Herd” last month that Iguodala has already been offering him advice, and even told him “he has the chance to be special on both offense and defense.” http://www.silverscreenandroll.com/...-walton-brandon-ingram-andre-iguodala-podcast
But similar body types?? Skinny? Maybe when he was really, really younger. Long arms though for sure and Luke's points well taken.
I know that was hyperbole, but when you think about it - he did not have more muscle at the age of 7, but at the age of 14-15 he surely did.
yeah, i see what luke's doing, but they're really different players. the main message is right on, though: hands up. i'm baffled by how few nba players play defense in proper physical position (balance, hands up, head up). it's as confusing as the terrible footwork on pick and roll plays by nba bigs. all of this is really correctable. like, ten minutes of junior high practice correctable. how do you get this far not knowing any of these things? if i were 6'8", would i be making 8 figures just for not being a d******?
This is true, but as Luke has said in post game interview. The small ball lineup when we go to it he isn't looking for the Center to be able to be a great help defender. Luke was adamant about everyone having to do a better job of staying in front of their guys because the help defender (rim protection) wouldn't be there. Well you want to do small, there is a reason for it, play faster. Black doesn't do that compared to Nance and Randle. We're going to have to get better at man to man defense before going with the small ball lineup more often. I agree that if we're talking about hands, Black does have the best between Randle and Nance.
Yeah no harm in hooking him up with Iggy but Ingram has 5" standing reach on him and 4" on wing span, not the same type of bodies. Iggy IS skinny but Ingram has the potential to play further off players than Iggy could. Brandon is longer. Anthony Davis is 1.5" short of Ingram's standing reach. Not matter though as Iggy is great to learn hands from, and so is Artest ftm. He has length potential to be an all-time defender so Luke should hook him up with everyone he can. With such a good feel for the game though I don't think it should be any great mystery to him though, I think it's a matter of the fundamentals (like keeping hands up like Luke said and consistent effort on that end) and the rest will come to him. His length, timing and ability to read will take him far but D is first and foremost effort and fundamentals.

great job getting ingram to be aggressive/assertive! cant imagine he who must not be named putting the ball in ingrams hands like that
Crew is relaxed out there on the floor while still maintaining some intensity. Next step is learning how to win...the confidence is definitely there.
