Isaiah Thomas might have been the last true dominant pg to win a title. And I'm talking the one on the Pistons that played in the 80's, not the one on the C Bags. :D You might be able to make a case for Tony Parker in 2007.

I'm not sure that's his game, and that's okay.

Yes, that seems to be the case. His game suits the modern game. But I'm not losing faith in D'Angelo bringing back Showtime.

16 points, 9 dimes, 4/8 from 3. Not bad other than 5/13 shooting. This guy has superstar written all over him. He's finding his way in this league and when he does good luck stopping him. Look forward to seeing D'Lo hit a few game winners this season.

At least he showed up this team unlike the last outing with Golden State.

    Too many TOs, though

What a pass. Hope to see more of that. Draw those two interior defenders and the roll big gets an easy slam.

True, but I'm not worried too much about the TO's because he's adjusting his game to get his teammates involved. Result: high assists. Exactly what I've been preaching.

I'd definitely like to see him get the turnovers down

He seemed to be fighting his nature a bit. He wanted to show up and show out and go get some big shots/moments against his idol and against the front runners but also run the team. I liked it. I much preferred this aggressive version of the kid than the one from the previous game.

In short: I saw plenty tonight that made me think this kid can be special and one day could be in the echelon of the opposition.

It is the preseason, too. Some of those TO's could havd been negated, but the coaching staff can always go back, watch film, and he can learn where he can be better.

I think its clear he's not a pure PG, I will echo others saying in this thread that he doesn't need to be one and that's fine for the "modern" game... He's not Steph-like either, more than anything he reminds me of James Harden

Russell did that at Ohio State...played both roles that is. Last year, his playing time was uneven because of the staff's reluctance and partly his own issues. Russell is still learning on the fly while adjusting to the speed of the pro game and what his teammates are capable of. He already has chemistry with Clarkson. Work in progress with Randle and currently with Deng, Mozgov and Ingram. He no longer has to cater to 24 that stunted his development.

my response to rrofy was going to be that it was a harden-like game, with 9 assists and 7 turns. like harden, about half of russell's turnovers are of the lazy variety, which is infuriating. i'm guessing this is part of why scott took the woodbutt approach at times. maybe luke can get him to start valuing the ball more.

^...yes, Russell tends to get lackadaisical and careless with the ball though I noticed with his dribbling not necessarily with his passing. He tends to keep it high which gets poked away upfront or from behind. I'd say Russell gets deliberate to compensate for his lack of speed.

I do see a bit more Harden in Russell.
