I hate Baxter Holmes. I've heard from a handful of people it's a good article, but I still hate him.

I heard it's about gaining weight the right way. Duh.

Sorry abeer. I'm sure it's a good article, but that man reeks of self-importance and I dislike his face immensely.

One of the things said in there is he is still growing and some observers expect him to wind up another inch or two taller :Magic Brows:

well, that's not how i read it. my takeaway was that people need to stop obsessing over him gaining weight.

i thought it particularly important given that there seems to be widespread fan adherence to the theory that ingram MUST gain weight and will only be effective after that's happened.

i think you work with nature; you don't fight against it. he'll get bigger because people get bigger as they age and stop growing. this nonsense about eating a billion calories all day was actually scaring me until i read the article and learned that he stopped doing that (because it was stupid).

i was also glad to hear that the entire lakers' organization tends to think the same way i do about it.

so, the main reason i posted it was to allay anyone else's concern that the lakers were trying to get ingram to bulk up.

I'm not being disagreeable to you, just to Holmes. I can't stand that guy and I refuse to acknowledge his part in good media production!

As far as weight gain and the high calorie count, it can be done safely and in some cases this summer may have been necessary. In the buildup to the draft he was doing video workouts, flying cross country for more workouts, etc. etc. and he was likely burning through a ridiculous amount of calories in the process. His body clear metabolizes differently than most and high calorie count might be necessary to maintain even the modest size he has now. Keep in mind that many Olympic athletes and bodybuilders in the height of training can eat 5000 calories a day (hoepfully good calories!) too. It's all just dependent on what's going on and what he's trying to do.

If he's trying to bulk up, then sure he should eat a ton of calories. It's important to the process.

If I were training him for basketball, I'd be doing squats and lunges and deadlifts 3 times a week. I don't give a hoot about his upper body getting much bigger, but I think it'll be important for him to have more meat on his legs to withstand the grind of 82 games. In that process I'd monitor his calorie intake closely and we'd try to put on manageable weight. At his age with his frame and the equipment/means surrounding him I don't see why he couldn't put on a good 5-10 pounds of functional weight before the season starts. Obviously he doesn't want to blow up or anything, but 5-10 pounds in manageable, functional weight doesn't seem too crazy to me.

The concept of piling calories on and eating a pizza every day and doing all kinds of stuff like that is silly to me. That's obviously not the way to approach this. I assumed that the high calorie intake he had was connected to some training method. If that's not the case, then sure he was doing it wrong.

So are we finally gonna sign him now that Westbrook is completely out of the question? But then again we could still foolishly trade him for Cousins.

To some I guess it is. When I was in my early 20's, my metabolism was so fast that I had to consume multiple meals a day just to keep weight on. It wasn't fun, it was a chore. Every 2 to 3 hours or so I had to eat something or else my weight would plummet. I'm so glad my metabolism isn't like that anymore.

On top of that when you have to eat that much, you still don't want to eat junk food, so that just makes the process that much more difficult. I don't miss it at all. The enjoyment of food goes away completely.

Yes, eating 5.000 healthy calories is indeed not that easy. That I agree with. But as far as I'm concerned, he doesn't have to have a strict diet.

Considering he needs more than 2k calories a day just sitting around, considering he also works out a lot, he should (even without any diet or anything) easily end up with 4.000 calories a day. Thats probably what his body burns a day. If he eats 3k, then he is actually losing weight.

I eat about 3,500 less than that lol. Although I've needed to lose weight. Although all you had to do is pretty much a whole pizza which I've done before quite easily.

There's gaining weight and there's gaining weight.

It's one thing to crush down 5000 calories a day just to gain weight. It's an entirely different thing to try to compete at an elite athletic level while eating that. Certain foods that are useful for packing on weight aren't going to make you feel good (I mean, like, tummy aches and whatnot) as you run around and be athletic - and others are going to play havoc with your insulin levels. Lakers should put a nutritionist on Ingram.

maybe he should take a a page from the late great Manute Bol and drink Heinekens all day. According to Jayson Williams (yeah, that Jayson Williams), coaches and trainers asked Manute to drink all day in order to gain weight, apparently wasn't sober for majority of the games he played :D

When I was in my 20s I was skinny like Brandon (maybe not quite as much). I was 6'3" and weighed 150 no matter what I ate. I decided I wanted to pack on some muscle because I was getting pushed around in my league. So I hit the gym hard and started eating tons of protein and meals like 8 egg omelets and the like. I did gain 90lbs of mostly muscle. Now I'm older and wish I had never trained my metabolism to be this heavy.

i "trained" my metabolism in my twenties (largely by drinking and eating too much whilst in grad school--call it the manute bol plan, if you will) and have spent the time since slowly untraining it.
