he's been great with defence on Harden and the last minute heroics. but overall another bad game.
in the first half everyone was clicking except for one guy...

THIS. For goodness sake right when we're about to bury him officially he finally does what we've all been waiting for. He actually played defense pretty well on Harden all game long. I have a suspicion that Harden wasn't going all that hard in the first half, but when it counted Wesley did pretty well defensively.

Offensively, sheesh. He's a wreck. Somehow his shot still isn't consistent. He likes to lean a lot and he almost never makes the leaning shots (sounds like Artest, but it's worse). His corner three is the most consistent shot he has. He needs to milk that. I still don't know how he hasn't learned how to cut though. Long, athletic, slim... he's got the cutter's body type in the NBA.

I'm still down on this kid, but props where they're due: great job of icing the game.

Wes couldn't stay in front of Harden the entire 2nd half. He got the huge steal, props for that, but if he wasn't getting step back jumpers in his face, Harden went right by him with ease.

    Positives
    1. Hit the glass
    2. Taking on guarding Harden and getting that steal.
    3. Active

    Negatives
    1. Needs to work on that jumper
    2. Needs to learn to move off the ball and not stand around. A simple cut will yield him easy baskets.
    3. Getting beat off the dribble. Needs to move his feet, relies too much on length and fouls.

Better game from Wes, I've been hard on him all season long, because he's frustrating to watch. But that last 2-3 minutes he really picked up his activity and did the things we needed him to do. Be active, defend, crash the boards.

I don't consider that bad defense in today's NBA in context. Nobody can stay in front of Harden much these days, the rules make it really difficult. But at least when Harden got around him, Wes would stay on his hip and force him into the defense. Harden had his most turnovers since the Rockets played the Spurs back on November 6th. Johnson played pretty well considering everything we've seen so far.

Well, Wes started defending Harden well when he starting guarding Harden's left. What get's Wes in trouble is when he's flat footed. 50% of defense is knowing what type offensive player it is, and playing to their weaknesses. Unless it's Kobe, you might as well give up.

As @CaCHooKa Man mentioned in the Gametime chat Wes did have a kickball in the 1st half, which was his only highlight of the first half.

Great posts. Yeah, that leaning thing he does is weird. I know this is going to sound rough, but you know what Wes reminds me a lot of is an Irish setter. They are really skinny and lanky and like to lean on things. Not exactly the smartest pooches either.

But props for coming through when we had all just about given up on him. I liked that we stopped double teaming Harden - that's when Wes did really well on him. Occasionally Wes does the dive cut and he's been rewarded when he does. He NEEDS to do more of that - not just standing around on the outside looking for the three, and definitely never drive. He has no handles. But the dive cut they should work on with him more often to get him easy looks at the hoop.

1 good play defensive play at the end of the game doesnt make up for zero contributions in the 11 games prior, at least not for me. He's still useless unless he starts bringing it most nights.

Wes needs to know his strengths.

From 0-3', he shoots 75% this year (67% career).
    From 10-16' he shoots 46% (40% career).
He shoots 33% on the corner three (34% career).

I want him shooting at the rim, preferably catching it on the run, or open corner threes. I'd rather he doesn't do anything else on offense. I don't want him dribbling around or trying to take guys off the dribble. Just run, camp, and shoot or run, catch, and finish. He has the athleticism to shoot 50% in the NBA.

Maybe he reads all the negative posts and we can keep it going by dogging him some more!

Wes has been praised by Byron and Kobe. Kobe's belief in hard work and his ability to tutor has blinded him to Wes' faults. He thinks he can make an Ariza. And he kind of has to be an Ariza lite if we can progress. We are stuck with him due to this backing so though I may castigate on this site I hope that Wes has the sense to not read these sites as the abuse is pretty harsh. I treat a fan site like a public place and you have freedom of speech to express your frustration. Common decency means however if you met Wes you would be polite and not be one of those angry fans who thinks that negative publicity gives you immunity to say any insulting or hateful thing to Wes. So Wes if you are reading either grow a real thick mamba skin or just expect these sites to be a little nsfw (not suitable for Wes) till about June. Also all bets are off next game, but I did enjoy your best Laker moment last game.

The model for Wes is Thabo Sefolosha type role. Play limited minutes all out, focusing on defense. Without Nick, Wes was exposed with too many minutes, but with Nick back, now his role makes sense. For that role is actually very good. He can guard 1-4, he is long and athletic. Sometimes he loses focus and his shot comes and goes, but in his role he can be effective. He was not retained to be a prime scoring option.

You do know that Wes is still playing 30+ minutes with Nick back right? Hopefully, getting Ellington back will help with that.

Three and D. Three and D. Three and D. (and the occasional slash/fast break scorer).

This guy needs to figure it out and that needs to be chanted for him so he gets an idea of what's needed from him. As for minutes:

    Lin (30)/Price (10)/ Clarkson (8)
    Bryant (32)/ Ellington (12)/ Clarkson (4)
    Johnson (20)/ Young (28)

We're healthy now on the perimeter so let's see some more balance! And yes I'm completely aware that Clarkson won't play if Price/Ellington are healthy. Those minutes at SG will probably go to Kobe.

Unfortunately, what's happening is that Johnson is actually dipping into Boozer's minutes to finish games, when it really should be Davis getting extra minutes at the 4.

Less Boozer is a start, honestly.
