They did, but he said he doesn't think he could get away with that on a regular basis. I believe Pincus or Medina brought up KG and his famously illegal screens, but Randle said he's too young to get those calls every night.
http://www.dailynews.com/sports/201...andle-to-train-this-offseason-to-become-great This is why he's my favorite of the young kids.
I'm with you, I was just giving his response. Seeing him set those screens should really make him figure it out. The between the lines reading that I'm doing from all these exit interviews is that Julius really doesn't respect D'Angelo's approach much so he doesn't set him hard screens regularly. Kind of an old-school mentality honestly and I think it'll go away as long as he, D'Angelo, and Jordan (and hopefully Nance) are working out this summer.
He got a LOT better at setting screens as the season progressed though. Much of his hesitancy I think is part of what Bass was talking about - he needs to play and he needs time on the court to figure these things out. It'll come. I already saw big growth in this department. Setting screens is something you need to get a feel for out there, when to be aggressive with it, how to avoid an offensive foul. He was tentative at the start but he's getting it now. Like realdeal, I like what Randle is talking about now. He's got work to do and it sounds like he will tackle it. He has been a hard worker so far so I doubt he stops now. Keep it going, Julius! Work on that jumper, that step back, those threes, your finishes and fakes at the rim, your man on defense, your help D . . . Everything needs work. But he's got the raw talent and the physical gifts for sure.
randle's comments are generally encouraging, but these comments from him and others are what I was talking about weeks ago when people got upset: how does one work on "not falling asleep" off the ball? james harden hasn't figured it out, and I'm certain it's all he hears about. the right hand can improve (has to). the jumper can improve (has to). but can "court awareness" improve? bass is implying yes, and I agree. but to what degree? we'll see. and now I've caught the rhyming fever.
I'm not certain at all that the coaching staff in Houston gives him a hard time about it. I figure everyone over there just lets him do what he wants. I figure the same about this coaching staff that we have too.
There's plenty of players who can improve their off ball defense. Again it's like some people can't understand the kid was a freaking rookie. What rookie doesn't fall asleep on defense? If every rookie was a great defender from the get go teams would've have any problems rebuilding. James Harden doesn't give a crap about defense. With Julius it's more about learning and now we have a coach to teach him who'll hire the right assistants.
After watching Green thrive in the system over there how could he not be giddy? And if they're chummy, I'm sure Green has mentioned how opportunistic their offense is and how it can benefit Randle's game.
Randle needs to get a jumper before he can be Green though, right now he couldn't hit a water if he fell off a boat.
Yep. Green is a great defender, and he also can hit the 3 ball with some consistency. If Randle can develop a jumper and improve his defense, he will be unguardable.
Something encouraging to note for Randle as far as shooting goes: this is essentially Julius' rookie season right? Well Draymond didn't come into the NBA as a three point threat. Draymond 3s by year: rookie: 14/67 (20.9%) sophomore: 55/165 (33.3%) third year: 111/329 (33.7%) fourth year: 100/258 (38.8%) - first year All-Star selection Julius as a "rookie": 10/36 (27.8%) Defensively I'm not sure Julius ever gets to Draymond's level, but he can certainly be a more passable defender. Everyone wants Julius to be Draymond, but I see him being more like Klay. Julius has the tools to be an extremely different cover. Just because we're going to run a GS-esque offense doesn't mean we have to copy what they do. We're going to adapt what we do to fit our roster more. Klay and Steph create the starting point because they're such great shooters, they command attention. Then GS uses a bevy of shot creators to make good decisions and get good looks which includes Draymond, Iguodala, Livingston, and even Bogut. For us, Russell and Randle create the mismatch. Randle is too quick for PFs and too strong for SFs. Russell is bigger than 90% of other point guards, can shoot, and has great vision. I see Julius being a monster in Luke's offense, but not necessarily in the way we think right now. And I know I'm going to get huge flack for this comparison, but I'm not saying Julius is going to be Klay. I know that. I'm saying from a conceptual standpoint Julius creates the mismatch we need to get the defense on their heels. So does D'Angelo. That's the starting point. Now we need a SF that can read the weaknesses in the defense, defend well himself, and of course knock down shots. Eventually I see us creating something that looks like a mix between Showtime and what the Warriors run.
Spot on analysis @therealdeal. I agree with you regarding Julius. I have been hard on him all year and even said I don't really see him becoming a great player. But I think with Luke in the fold, he has a much better chance of becoming great now. He averaged a double double in his rookie season, and I'm not sure why so many people are still sleeping on him...I guess that's what happens when you win only 17 games. I'm glad he's on our team and yes, I do believe he can be a beast from the pinch post. He'll have plenty of opportunities to dish out to guys that can shoot. We badly need a 3 and D wing player though to help open up the floor for Julius, Clarkson and Russell. And a solid big man that can hit 15 footers. That could do wonders for this offense.
That's part of why I love the Barnes idea. I know I said he proved he's not worth the max, but I also understand that's what we're likely the amount we'll have to pay. I get it and if that's what we need to do to get to him, then fine. I'm also okay overpaying a bit for Ezeli in order to put GS in a crunch financially. Part of me hopes they make a huge run at Durant so that we can take some of their players. Any who: Barnes is a great fit with our roster. Young, still room to grow, and with us he'll have greater responsibility than he did in GS. He would help tremendously as an extension of Luke on the court though. He's been around Luke, knows the offense more, knows what we're looking for, and can get out there and execute things for us. From a basketball perspective though he's AT LEAST a 3 and D type of player. He can also post-up pretty effectively and he's got great athletic ability to boot. I know some guys aren't high on Julius, but I see great potential in him. He's still got some wild horse in him and he's definitely got a long way to go, but he's a mature kid who works hard and there's a lot to be said for that. I think he's going to surprise some people next season when he comes in. I have every bit of faith that his shooting will improve and he'll be more attentive defensively.
