Wow. I hope this sets a precedent. You're overpaid and think you're safe, nope, see ya.

Really crazy move by them. Apparently they couldn't get a trade for Smith that didn't involve the Pistons GIVING AWAY a 1st Rounder just to get rid of him. Crazy!

Pistons just said "forget this" and cut bait. Smith will likely end up in Houston to be with little Howie. I'd love to see the Mavs or any team for that matter upend them.

The Josh Smith should be a case study for all GM"S

It was the classic bad deal. Overpaying, and overextending (the contract was too long) on a player who showed a bad attitude and would not "fit" into a system.

We all know why it was done. Detroit needed talent. The GM needed to be seen to be doing something to make the team better. Engaged Smith had the athleticism talent etc to justify the money.

If somebody does not fit, then you have to pass on them. I hope the Lakers have the strength to make the right decision. At the moment their is pressure from the fans to get Melo, Rondo, Love, anybody that would be classes as an all star. Kobe and the Buss family want another star too no doubt. But at what cost.

I think most people thought Van Gundy and Smith would be tense, but assumed SVG would just put up with him. SVG inherited Smith as coach and GM of Detroit, I believe it is a strong message of support for SVG and shows how bad Smith must have been to get dumped like this. Both Smith and the Pistons are better for this move, as the Pistons are tanking whether they want to or not this year.

I hope we can look at this and realize that we may have to wait for the right player, even as Kobe runs out of time. We need to look for that draft pick, and pick up those second tier players rather than going for the home run, In order to get a player nowadays you need to overpay and overextend to an extent. I guess Detroit thought they could always trade him for something. I think the holding onto the draft pick (1st) was a wise choice for them. Plus they don't have to take back any junk either.

this was sort of obvious, especially after Houston supposedly said they'd guarantee him a staring position/heavy minutes. i'll be curious to see how it plays out.
