Every coach has its flawes but comparing JVG or MJ to b0ron is straight up disrespectful...
There are no worse coaches than b0ron. PERIOD.

Well Byron eventually realized that Clarkson is better than Ronnie Price, so you gotta give him some credit right?

Agreed. I haven't read anything convincing about Luke. He's not a viable option. Especially for a young group like our's.

Yeah, he's capable of managing a near perfect team. But can he coach and develop an imperfect team? I'm not sure why we'd want to experiment when there are proven options out there. Why is there a need to gamble?

To me there is only one criteria on who we should hire --- a coach that will develop and maximize the potential of our young players. Nothing else is more important for at least another couple of years.

This is false. Clarkson only started getting run when Price was dealing with bone spurs in his elbow in late Jan and eventually had to be shut down for the season with surgery. To add to that Kobe was out for the season with his rotator cuff when Clarkson started getting more time. Nick Young fractured his knee cap around the same time as well. He only got run d/t injuries + Lin was the only other PG on the roster and he was in and out of the dog house with Byron.

I will not give Byron credit for that. Had everyone been healthy, Clarkson would have been in the D-League all season long.

I really don't get what the fuss is about in regards to Luke. Again I don't believe you can just throw out what he did in Golden State just because it's Golden State. He did a great job there showing that he's not intimidated by coaching an all time great team. He showed that he has all the traits of being a great coach. He's got a high IQ. Knows the game. Knows how to teach. Guys like Steve Kerr, to his players are always complimentary of his basketball knowledge. He didn't allow that team to relax which easily could've happened following a championship. It's mind boggling to me that Luke gets no credit for continuing to get them to play championship basketball. Is he still unproven to some degree? Sure, but so is Ollie. So was Brad Stevens when it comes to pro basketball. We've seen plenty of college coaches fail so it's far from a given. At some point the Lakers have to take a chance. Just like they took a chance on D'Angelo because he has exceptional potential. They have to take a chance on Luke or one of these other guys like Ollie. There's always a possibility it won't work, but you can't keep doing the same thing and I don't see any supposed veteran proven coaches who are the right coach for this time. Can Luke develop the young players? I absolutely think he can because he's already shown he can communicate with players and he'll understand how to get through to them given the fact that he was once a young player trying to make his way. He has gotten to see Kerr coach on the sideline for over a season. He watched how great Phil was playing for him for so long. He understands the young guys will take time. He's not like Byron where he won't have any patience. Him being a young coach himself I think he'll be able to appreciate that aspect of the growth process as much as anyone.

What proven options? How many games has Ollie or Messina coached at this level?

Luke at least has some degree of experience at this level.

This whole notion of not gambling. Ugh that's what our last three hires have been. Veteran proven coaches. How'd that turn out for us? Look at Boston. Were they afraid to gamble on a guy like Stevens. Kerr was a huge unknown and he helped the Warriors play above and beyond what they did under Mark. At some point you have to take chance and can't keep doing the same thing.

Not sure about the whole proven part. I mean, Mike Brown and Byron Scott were both thought to be dreadful, dreadful coaches...and for some reason we hired them despite many, many people screaming. D'Antoni did have a recent track record of success, and if it wasn't leaked that Phil was willing to come back and we chose D'Antoni over him, I think D'Antoni isn't the huge villain he is here today. I still think that if D'Antoni had this current roster, we would have won 30 games or so this season. This team was tailor made for his play style. D'Antoni is not a good all-around coach, but he was given a team with the worst personnel possible for his system: A ball dominant sg and two giants at the 4 and 5. D'Antoni never should have been hired because of the personnel we had and the other option was the perfect coach for said personnel. But if we never had hired D'Antoni and we had this team, I'm not going to lie, I wouldn't be upset if his name was in the mix. Granted, it's hard for us as Laker fans to ignore what we learned about him a couple years ago. But if you can picture a scenario where he NEVER coached here and we had no experience with him, this roster looks like a D'Antoni team.

Good points about needing to change up our approach and be more willing to take a chance on potential. Whatever shortcomings Luke or Kevin might have, we can easily shore up with the right assistants. If we feel that Luke might be too easy on the kids then we go out and get a hardass old school assistant that'll take up that role. It's not all on the HC, need the right staff as well.

For me it's Kevin Ollie first, Luke behind him and then Messina. I don't want any part of JVG or Mark Jackson even though I think they both have their strengths.

Ollie just makes the most sense to me. He's helped developed young players as a teammate alongside Durant and Westbrook - please review those comments that Durant made about him and his time on OKC, and how big an influence that was on him. That's no joke.

Ollie's developed young players as coach of UConn and of course he's won an NCAA championship there. That's a LOT more experience as a Head Coach than what Luke's done filling in by proxy at Golden State. I don't even see how there's a debate. Ollie's been a head coach for four years already. Was it the NBA? No, but we're talking about head coaching experience and developing young players from a leadership position. And our young core is basically college age. I think Ollie is the best candidate to get our guys on the same page and help them to take their skills to the next level.

Now, if it doesn't work out with Ollie, I'm all in for Luke. I'd rather take a chance with him over Messina.

It's not like Luke fully took over. Kerr didn't die and bequeath the team to him and magically reappear. He was still advising, etc. Odds are, he took Kerr's game plan and just made sure it went smoothly. That's easy to do with a disciplined champion. It's a different story when you're banking on kids who can barely drink with no structure in place.

Agreed. Those two are my absolute front runners and it'll be up to one of them to pull away in interviews. Messina is behind just because he's much older and I'm not sure he brings the kind of fire and spark to the position that the other two will bring. If he stands out in interviews though, I'd definitely have to give him another look. If we went that direction, I'd be a little surprised but not disappointed.

Let's not overlook that Luke can tell stories to all the new young players each year who ask what it was like to play alongside Kobe Bryant for his own two championship rings. What did Kobe want to find out much as possible from Phil and Tex .... what was Jordan like?

    :Shaqwink:

Am winking but I'm half serious here. One of the 2 best all around skilled and most fiercely competitive and winning players in the history of the game. Jordan 1 and Kobe 1A. His legend will grow and young guys are going to love first hand information. Plus Luke was there to see just what went mentally into iconic super stardom. As well, also with Stephen Curry.

Hey lots of good arguments made for Ollie too. I agree them both over Messina. If Messina was brought in as consultant to Mike Brown why was he so ineffectual and unpersuasive to get Brown to fix that stupid offense he ran? Remember Bynum getting the ball out past the top of the key so many times down, eating 10 seconds off the clock. Maybe Brown was a stubborn idiot like Boron, but with Messina on staff he should have pushed harder to fix that crap. I know, things are much further along with him in the NBA game now and being Pop's right hand guy on the bench is excellent for his development. Just think he's too old for all the young guys coming up.

Looks like Lakers are looking for a "recruiter-in-chief" for our next HC....that's GREAT to hear. I think the Lakers FO believes that Byron was one of the major reasons FA's didn't sign with us....he's never been someone that could recruit due to his rep as being a drill sergeant and eventually wearing out his welcome and players tuning him out.

I'm trying not to get my hopes up but so far, it seems like the FO is literally reading our comments with the news that keeps coming out regarding our coaching search

Luke is a transition into Phil the following year and that has bad news written all over it. Do not want.

We need to branch out and get some new blood in here.

yeah i thought about that too in regards to luke. although if jim buss does give step down and let jeannie take his place, it's all but given that phil will come back which is something i really don't want

i hope they're not hiring luke based on that most likely happening

I'm also with you guys on the Phil hate wagon. If we're hiring Luke just so Phil can come back and take over this team and make Luke run the god damn triangle....I will lose it.

This is why I've bumped Ollie to the top of my list. He's the guy that can be a recruiter of FA's but also develop our young talent if we strike out. I think Luke can do the same, but I'm so damn scared of Phil coming back and controlling Luke.
