Absolutely. There's good reason for optimism right now, but there's also plenty of room for trepidation.

I'm feeling fairly optimistic at this moment with the Lakers making the right coaching decision and clearly having a plan for their coach. Hearing that they're trying to get this move done quickly means they've got a pretty good idea of what they want to do which is a far cry from the delays the last time around. They're off to a really great start, but boy is there a long way to go.

We still need to make sure we get the right coach, hope we keep the pick (we'll need a good amount of luck), then start trying to figure out the FA situation. Do we keep going with the kids or do we swing for the fences by trading a couple of them? Tough call. It really would depend on who we can get in FA, but we won't know that for a few weeks.

I'm going to keep my cautious optimism until after they hire a coach. Once they hire the right coach, I'll start to really feel good about what we're doing this summer.

To kind of get back to the point here: Byron...

It's absolutely shocking the reason they gave for him being let go. By the way officially it's "Byron's option wasn't picked up."

I mean really it's the same thing in the end, but when you think about the implication it's truly frightening for Byron and slightly encouraging for the Lakers. The implication means two things:

    1. Byron Scott was so horrible that the Lakers didn't pick up his option. The Lakers built his contract in a way that they could get out after two seasons if he didn't meet certain coaching goals. We aren't privy to those goals, but it can be assumed that "Win Total" is a good place to start and obviously he didn't hit any reasonable win total goals. I mean even in our low expectations going into these seasons we've been hoping for a floor of about 30-35 wins and he's done exactly twice as bad a job. The team showed no coherent offensive or defensive plan, no improvement in areas of concern (Clarkson's defense, D'Angelo's consistency, Julius's awareness, etc), the players weren't focused, and on and on and on. There's so many more things I could say, but it's all beating a dead horse of course. It's just shocking how incredibly poor Byron's job performance has been when he couldn't even meet what had to be somewhat modest goals. How bad does he have to be to stink his way out of a job? I know we all thought he was awful, but it's kind of scary thinking about exactly how bad he must be.

    2. The Lakers knew from the get-go that Byron wasn't the answer here. That's truly encouraging. That means that the Lakers knew from the beginning that Byron was a stopgap coach who was brought along just to help get Kobe to the end. That was really the only thing they expected out of him and it worked. I'm sure along the way they'd hoped for more, but they at least knew not to expect more and they gave themselves a way out. Max Kellerman brought up the good point that D'Antoni's hire, while wrong at the time, was at least forward thinking. The Lakers knew what the NBA was rolling towards and they wanted to be ready to get there. D'Antoni has a ton of problems and I don't want him back, but I'm not the only one who was saying during the year that our roster was more suited to him this season. It's encouraging to think the Lakers FO isn't as incompetent as they've played themselves to be. They're at least cognizant of their issues which is half the battle sometimes.

IMO, Byron did a great job with Clarkson. A 2nd round pick should not be 1st Team All Rookie.

    And that's all I got.

When D'Antoni left CL/LB had the same atmosphere that we are now feeling with Byron, it was joy and all-around happiness. Then when Byron's name was floated around, there were some initial dissent from a few, but for the most part, we as a collective whole rationalized it away by saying he was a connection to the Showtime era and would bring that winning culture back because of his championship pedigree. There were people likening Chris Paul's development under him to what Russell would be. Fast forward to today, and I can definitively say with no hesitation that 1) I was completely wrong on my analysis of Byron, 2) D'Antoni was a much better coach, and 3) Russell's development was hindered.

What i'm hearing from people right now, is that Luke, having that Lakers connection, will come in and change things for the better and I can't help but think this eerily similar to what we said about Bryon. I mean we can go back to the first few pages of this thread to see...

There's a big difference though. I remember at CL many ppl had reservations about Byron being coach as he had almost always worn out his welcome at other squads....and eventually the players tune him out. I never liked the Byron hire, but I thought eh, could he be worse than Dantoni? Nah, probably not. But then he actually ended up being the worst coach OF ALL TIME....now THAT I did NOT see coming. I don't think anybody saw this coming.

Well I can't speak for others, but I definitely wasn't thrilled with the hiring. Byron had failed miserably in other stops so I wasn't jumping with joy. Luke hasn't had an opportunity yet. Byron did and didn't have consistent success so they're completely different circumstances. I don't see people giving up on Luke just because of a tough start. That's to be expected. It'll take some time as it will with the young players.

Yeah I agree that there's some similarities with Luke and Byron, but Luke comes with almost none of the baggage of Byron and far lower expectations.

It's a very valid point. I've been hesitant to jump on the Luke wagon. To me he is unproven to a team like ours. I like Luke, I like his demeanor, I like that he's young and can relate to the current incoming NBA generation. I heard him talking about GSW practices and saying how loose they were with tunes cranking out of boom boxes. Well GSW is a bunch of SELF-DISCIPLINED vets and we are not GSW in any way shape or form. I'm just worried we could be setting ourselves up for a similar disappointment with that hire because Luke quite obviously can not operate the same way with our squad as he can with GSW. I'm sure he realizes that but what's the plane then? As far as I'm concerned Luke is an unknown rather than a proven. My gut says he's a instant improvement over Scott but is that really saying anything.

I was one who ignored the nay sayers have to admit. Maybe it was Clarkson though that was being said about as Russell wasn't even here yet courtesy of Boron's epic first tank job last year when it was fun to post all the pictures of tanks. Very few pictures this year as no one wanted a tank job nor expected it with the better roster Mitch put together.

With Russell smacked down with the reality of what can happen from goofing around on Nick and the severe fallout he got, knowing he has to repair his image, he's not going to be a problem. Nance, no as well. Julius is not going to be a problem. Clarkson's 24 now and also knows he's being looked at because of his defense. There were a decent mix of good vets on the team too, though no telling what next year looks like. Has to have vets as well though. My point is this isn't going to be some romper room roster with goof off kids that the strong presence of a newly signed coach they all can respect is going to have those kinds of problems.

Not really what I'm worried about. I think Luke is mature enough to handle some of that kind of kid stuff anyways. I'm worried about maturity as players. On the floor, in practice, in the gym. These guys have basically spent the last year (or 2) working with a man with no plan. They are starting from maybe not zero, but pretty close in terms of playing as a team and with a system, trusting your teammates, etc. These guys are still very much a project. I don't know if Luke is ready for that. I don't think his stint with GSW (although very positive) tells us much in that regard. Mitch and Jim have really, screwed the pooch on coach hires now for 6 years and the pressure is on to get it right this time. I wonder if they'd take that big of a chance again.

i'm not worried about russell's development

sure byron's presence messed with it a bit but it was just one season and now that he's gone, and hopefully a good coach is put in place, he can start to develop properly and reach his potential

Can I ask why people want Luke so badly? That roster would have won those games with no coach earlier this season.

I'd go Ollie over Luke simply due to the fact he could help us get Durant. But, still give me Messina. He's simply the best basketball mind available.

It makes me chuckle. Luke was hated by 95% of CL years ago, now he's a borderline clubhouse favorite for coach. Time flies.

I would be happy of any of the 3 of Walton, Ollie, and Messina. All 3 would make sense for our team of youngsters.

I'd give Messina a good look as well, he had some exposure to the LA scene when he was a consultant for Mike Brown. But he recently has been under the exposure under Pop in San Antonio. He's a definately has a proven track record overseas thats for sure.

Ive read that Ollie would consider the job if he was given control of player personnel. So by default he's out of the picture?

He doesn't want control, juts input. The author made a grabby headline with a reasonable quote. Ollie just wants input on player personnel which makes complete sense.

Byron had player personnel input for what it's worth.

I'm not sure that team wins that many games without a good head coach. He still has to be there to control the rotations, massage the egos, make game adjustments, etc. He did a great job and I think he deserves the proper respect for that job.

Now, it's a legit concern whether or not that translates to what the Lakers need. We're not even a good team, let alone a great team. Can Luke implement a system himself without someone pointing him the right direction? Tough call. Personally, I think he's a near perfect fit. If he were a couple of years older, he'd be absolutely perfect. He's young enough to connect to the millenials, old enough to have ties to Kobe, was a champion here, and as our young players grow I think he can grow with them.

It is funny how things come full circle, but Luke was always a smart player... Just not a very good player. In fact if he wasn't so smart he probably wouldn't have been an NBA player at all.

All that said, I see why Ollie is ahead of him. Not just with the Durant factor, Ollie is perfectly poised to take the position. He has just about all the positives of Luke but with a bit more experience. Players around the NBA hold him in great esteem (not just KD). I'd be ecstatic with either of those two.

Messina is a solid fit too, but you run into the same potential problem that Blatt ran into. Messina has a tremendous overseas resume, but some players in the US don't respect that resume and so don't respect those coaches. I don't know what players think of him and that's going to be a big issue with the Lakers since FA is going to determine how many wins we have next season.
