Mitch did an exclusive interview on TWC for this story with Geeter.

    Some highlights:
    - Purely a basketball decision (Jim and Mitch made the move, Jeanie wasn't necessarily involved)
    - The record Byron had couldn't be discounted
    - They'd love continuity, but understand it's rare. Most coaches last 3-5 years, sometimes less.
    - He was still very thankful to Byron for being professional, dealing with playing youngsters, etc.
(They're playing a dramatic video of the exit interviews that shows exactly what most of us caught on to: Mitch's veiled comments about "a coach laying a foundation for another coach to take over")
    - They'll begin looking immediately through all different kinds of backgrounds (vets, young, college)
    - Don't want to stretch out the process, but will look at existing HCs, Assistants, etc.
    - Trying to narrow the list down already.
    - Unlikely anything done in a week, but won't take until FA like last time. (said maybe 2 weeks)
    - Tough to move forward into the next chapter with Kobe on board.
    - Understands the pain of the rebuild, but is hopeful of a quick rebound this summer.

    Worthy interview:
    - Worthy thought he'd have until February, but wasn't surprised.
    - (on being easy on Byron) Worthy points out they've been friends forever and said Byron wasn't given anything to work with. He said Byron would have worked better with D'Antoni's roster than D'Antoni did. The young players just weren't good enough to make a good team right away.
    - Worthy admitted there just weren't enough wins, but says young guys just weren't ready to compete yet.
    - Worthy says he was in the practices so he saw more from Byron's perspective, but admits if he hadn't seen the practices he would have been more critical (understands our point of view).
    - Expects a young coach who can deal with young players better.
    - Still says the kids need to take more responsibility even if he empathizes with them a bit.

    More to come.

Pincus said it best: control is a talking point, but input would work for everyone. Byron Scott had input in roster moves and draft choices, why wouldn't Ollie?

This coaching decision quickly has Ollie shooting to the top of most people's lists. Interesting since Luke has been a fan favorite all year.

    Much like Magic very predictable.

Man these guys are just embarrassing themselves. Byron had more talent the last two years than D'Antoni had in 2013-2014 so I don't wanna hear it James..

So Mitch has backed up Ireland's comments about making this decision quickly. I'm starting to think there's a method to this madness which gives me solid hope here. I was relieved with Byron being fired, but not exactly happy. Now I'm starting to get a little happier hearing the names we're talking about and the timelines involved.

It sounds like Walton and Ollie are the leaders in the clubhouse and we're trying to get this thing moving forward quickly so that we can get lined up for FAs, the draft, etc.

I love it. Things are really finally finally really starting to look up...

Im good with either Ollie or Luke. Leaning towards Ollie, though. Lets get this this coach thing done, then wrap up our pick, sign some FAs, dominate NBA once again.

Too soon for me to want to consider that. How about prove you can coach at the NBA level first? I can understand wanting to provide input, but you have zero leverage. I'm sure if there is mutual interest that is something that can be worked past. He certainly won't have veto power with an organization like the Lakers. He's a relative nobody at this point, and only lower tier franchises would consider such a thing for anyone actually. They didn't even give that ability to Phil I don't think.

He's got a point. Bottom line is, Mitch and Jimmy Boy didn't feel confident going forward and that's their right and I agree with it. But, Worthy is right. He wasn't given much to work with. I'll be honest: I thought the goal all along was to tank. If that wasn't the plan, I'm shocked and Scott deserves to be fired, along with Mitch and Jimmy Boy.

If Jeannie is serious about winning, it's time to step in and make the call on the next coach. Don't let them dictate the coach for the next 3 - 4 years and be hamstrung with a bad hire (assuming it is) and we get a new GM who wants his own coach.

I'm cautiously optimistic with how quickly we're trying to lock down a coach, and the names that are at the forefront are the two guys I would want to coach this team. I have Luke SLIGHTLY ahead of Ollie...but like somoene else said...it's more like 1A and 1B.

One thing I want to clear up....ppl need to stop saying "Luke doesn't have experience as a HC" or that "he's not ready". What I saw was a guy step into the HC role of a team that just won the NBA title and he somehow got them to play even BETTER than they did last year....I saw a guy make great in-game decisions...timely substitutions....adjusted the rotations accordingly when they lost guys like Barnes, Bogut and Ezeli for extended periods of time...I saw a guy with incredible calm and presence with a team full of great players that once again are coming off an NBA championship...I saw a guy avoid the "championship hangover" that most NBA champions experience a year after winning it all....Luke Walton has HC experience and yes, he had a great team, but I don't believe any NBA coach could let them to a 39-4 record or whatever it was by the time Kerr came back. He still had to coach...he still had to motivate his team...he still had to run plays...he still had to make decisions on how to distribute minutes...which rotations were the best mix of players...etc.

I understand supporting your boy, but....

    • No player development
    • No system implementation that was noticeable on offense or defense after two years
    • No personal responsibility for results
    • No results
    • No discernible rotations
    • It was like he thought having a non championship roster equaled an excuse for piss poor results vs working with what he had and developing it
    • There are no excuses for being next to last and last in O and D
    • He had no idea how to use the personnel he had, including solid proven vets.
    • Just embarrassing, there is no defending him

In your most rational observation at the start of last season would you have thought the plan was to tank? All we were hoping for was finally good health which we got. Except Kobe realized he couldn't do it any longer after this season and announced it. Still .... we did get the health all year long, and Mitch did assemble a considerably stronger team, youth notwithstanding, than we had the year before. After Byron craps the bed with his idiotic management of the personnel Mitch gave him to work with, and put us out of running for the playoffs after like 3 weeks, then yeah maybe the tank was on. It's disgusting that Byron forced that upon the franchise for a 2nd year in a row by his own ineptness.

Lakers were granted permission to talk to Messina.

    Sam Amick link.

He says that Walton and Messina are on the short list right now while Ollie and Van Gundy will likely receive consideration.

Not interested in Van Gundy. Hell no to Dunleavy even though it has been reported that he is coaching in college.
