Has anyone mentioned B Shaw yet? He's a nice combo of old school / new school and has that Laker pedigree the Buss family loves. He's got that Phil connection, without being a Phil hire like Rambis.

I see Shaw and Fisher kind of like Luke. I don't see them as tacticians. They need capable assistants who understand X's and O's and aren't stuck in the past.

Make one of them a head coach to communicate with players and bring in JVG (defense) and Ettore Messina (offense) for tactical support.

Refresh my memory, bit wasn't it Shaw in Denver with the whole thing about having to read a book about communicating with millenials? Memory legit isn't as great as it used to be (says the 29 year old).

I don't remember the details exactly either (says the 27 year old), but I def remember that he had issues with the younger guys on the team and not being able to relate to them

Thibs would have been my first choice. And I don't buy the fact that he was necessarily looking for the power he got in Minny. I may be wrong but maybe it was offered as an incentive to get him to sign there as soon as possible? I don't know. It's been stated more than once L.A. was his first choice. Had the front office acted sooner maybe they have a chance to snag him. Who knows. But at least it's done.

No it's pretty well known and acknowledged that he wanted that power. He wasn't gunning for Byron's job. He was gunning for Byron's job, Jim's job, and power over Mitch's job.

It stems from the issues he had with the GM in Chicago and the deal that Van Gundy was given in Detroit.

    My energy, it surges
    My hatred, it purges
    The Laker plan, it emerges
    Our FA spending, it splurges

Lakers had historic record lows in ratings this season, even with Kobe's last season. Me thinks someone got a phone call from a not too happy investor (TWC) looking at the future and called to demand some changes.

Ah well if that was the case, yeah I wouldn't want him to have that much power. I would just want him as coach that's it. That being the caveat he falls off my list.
Watching First Take this morning and it was mentioned Luke may not come over unless Jerry is brought back on board. Of course that was just SAS opinion, but it kind of would make sense. I wouldn't mind Jerry back with us, but as I understand there are burned bridges that would need mending before that happens. But it needs to happen; we need someone with experience putting together a championship team running things. At least they would know the right coach to bring to teach these young guys how to play together the right way.

    My list (in order):

Jeff Van Gundy - I know he's not the sexy "new/fresh" pick, but he is a hell of a coach and at this point, I'm not sure we can afford another bad hire. While the "reward" isn't as great as some of the young up-and-comers, at least he'll be solid and it won't blow up in our face. At worst, he's here for 3-4 years and our kids are MUCH improved on defense. Having Van Gundy here to teach our kids solid defensive principles this early in their careers might pay dividends long after he's gone.

Kevin Ollie - Young, but with a proven track record in college. And if we keep our pick, our roster could be a college team next season. He also has a good relationship with Durant and Westbrook.

Luke Walton - Young as well, and could have major upside. But he is very unproven as the unquestioned leader of the team. I would be happy if they hired him, but he's not my first or even second choice.

Jay Wright - I'll be honest, I don't know enough about this guy to really say I'm all in, but enough people who know basketball say he's a real bright guy, so I will put him 4th.

Guys we BETTER avoid like the plague:

Kurt Rambis - Dreadful NBA coach. He might as well change his name to PJs B***h.

Brian Shaw - Not sure he has the commanding presence to lead a team. Seems a little wishy washy.

Derek Fisher - Hated him as a player. He made big shots what wouldn't have been needed had he played even a shred of defense (not talking about the charges he took, I'm talking real defense). The best thing he did was he made other pgs look like all stars in big games which then caused our rivals to overpay for them, hurting their salary cap. As bad of a player he was, he was a worse coach. He's one of those guys who has everyone fooled. I also know something about him personally that I heard from a direct link to him that I will not mention because it's still technically hearsay even though I trust the source.

Mark Jackson - I was interested in him earlier in the season, but then I did some research on him and he's NOT someone I want here poisoning our youth.

pretty crazy to think that at one point the lakers had the likes of steve clifford, quin snyder, and etore messina all on the same staff and failed to realize their potential as head coaches

I completely agree with your "avoid like the plague" list, that Mark Jackson was mentioned on some Laker Writers lists as one candidate for us scares me, do not want. I'm not sure I agree with Jeff Van Gundy though. When was the last time this guy coached? I can barely remember, what I do remember is a little panicky dude who always looked like he was going to have a stroke and whose offenses were ugly as hell. If possible I'd like to get a coach that can teach both sides of the ball, unless JVG will bring in a great offensive assistant. One thing I know is he does have credibility, but it's been so long, he feels like another old school retread. I want a fresh hire, some imagination, not yet another name you know that was good in the 90's. JVG feels like Rudy T part 2.

I'm not sure I'd put him in the "old retread" category, but I admit, he isn't sexy. I'm just a little apprehensive about hiring a fresh coach because it could just as easily blow up in our face. We can afford to just do "solid" on this hire. We can't afford to whiff...again. If we were coming off just Brown and D'Antoni, I'd be all in on rolling the dice, but at this point, we are 3 horrible hires in a row. The revolving door needs to stop.

Like Weezy, I don't really want JVG but I agree with the rest of your list. This doesn't seem like a JVG type of roster to me at all. If he came back I would think he would want to work with a more veteran type of squad. That's one of the main reasons I'm not so afraid to go with a younger coach who could grow with this group. The realism is that unless we were trade some of our core I think we are going to go through a period of growing pains developing the roster. That might change a little with Free Agency, but that's basically what I am expecting.

THIS is why I'm not happy, just relieved. Ding shedding light on the chaos in the FO right now. They need someone to show them the right path forward... Badly.
