But at least Barney is a lovable loser. Byron is just a loser.

Been saying that I suspected Byron had hit this milestone to a pro-Byron friend for a few weeks now but I couldn't dig up the stat anywhere. I can't wait to shove it in his face. Thanks to Harrison for digging that up, I've been itching to find out if my hunch was correct.

The date on that is older than I thought, so it's a selective stat of worst coach ever. Only over 1,000 games coaching. That was a case of using the data to prove a point. Don't get me wrong, I really like that, but I think the one you were looking for was below...
    http://www.basketball-reference.com/coaches/NBA_stats.html

worstcoach.png Click here to see this list sorted by most games under .500 by a coach. He's right at the top, but hasn't exceeded it yet.

Strictly by winning percentage, he's the 148th worst ever, but that includes lots of coaches with no wins in one game, etc, interim guys, and more. He is one of the worst ever, and it would be nice to see him achieve the all time worst record below .500 by the end of the year, and go down in history as one of the worst to ever ply their trade.

People understand bad luck like Brian Shaw or Rambis or Fisher in short stints, but when you stink over the course of 1,086+ games over 16 years, and you are the only common denominator, you suck. There is no disputing it. I hope he achieves that. I. REALLY. HOPE. HE. DOES.

On the other hand, when I sort the data the other way just for fun, the two best winning percentage coaches ever can be fun. Also fun to notice who was in the Top 10 all time, but wasn't good enough for a king...

Best coach winning percentages all time.

He just has to lose 5 more games than he wins the rest of the way in order to clinch the #1 spot on Sirron's table. I'm pulling for him.

A team simply cannot justify rolling with a coach who racks up THE WORST RECORD EVER. It cannot be done. Impossible. INCONCEIVABLE.

Wouldn't put it past them given Jeanie's recent comments and demeanor.

I hope that theory isn't true. #1. Byron needs to be gone THIS offseason. #2. Keep Phil and his triangle coaching tree away from us. We'll end up with Eddie Jordan as our coach or something.

i don't want phil running things even if byron's gone. keeping byron in service of that is adding insult to injury. or is it further injury to injury?

It's insulting an injured person by injuring them further.

It's like Steve Blake and Steve Nash combining injury histories during their Lakers tenures.

Ugh. Yes, this "keeping Byron" thing reemerges every couple weeks no matter how HORRIBLY the guy is coaching and how many record breaking losses we keep amassing and how much he goes back to overplaying the vets instead of the young core.

Couple things strike me about it. 1. I think there's some truth in it or we wouldn't be hearing it so much from guys like Ireland who is employed by the Lakers and seems convinced that it's going to happen, even though he seems disappointed himself. This is coming from a guy who always defended D' Antoni at every turn. He clearly doesn't like Byron or his coaching. But he insists that he's returning and that makes me think it's more likely than not.

    2. I think Byron is in on the tank. If he is, this makes sense that the FO are leaking this kind of rhetoric: "we want to see how he'll do without Kobe, with a better roster," and confirms my fears that I voiced earlier this year that he will be rewarded for his complicity in the tank with finishing out his contract.

It's beyond depressing to contemplate this stuff. You would think that the records speak for themselves. He's going to give us the two worst seasons in franchise history. And yet most of the talk is about keeping him.

We'd better at least reach out to Luke Walton and see if he wants to come. If he doesn't, or wants to wait a year I can fully see us keeping Boron. And I will be so bummed.
