Exactly. This explains his reaction a bit more. I still think it was a bit much, but if he's never felt that particular pain before then I get it. I made the comparison to a kid who scrapes his knee the first time and freaks out and how funny it is to see them react. I didn't realize that was such a great comparison :D He literally never felt the pain before I bet he lost his crap mentally for a second there. I remember some of the first times I injured myself in various ways and sometimes I freaked out too until I realized I'd be fine. At least it makes sense now.

I've dislocated my shoulder probably 20 times. Playing basketball. Mostly (don't ask).

The first time it was awful - like, I thought I am gonna have to amputate.

Truth is - it doesn't even hurt (my variety, at least), it just kind of numb and you can't control it.

But that first time was horrible, because I didn't know what that was.

One thing's clear, we need to pair DRuss with a center who can pick and roll and finish.

We should think about trading for Tarik Black. He's a good young center that runs the pick and roll well.

Ed Davis would've fit this team really well.

If our off-season wet dream comes true and we land KD and Horford, Russell is going to eat up the league with his PnR.

Horford's not nearly as explosive as prime Amare, but their games are similar. If Randle gets down that jumpshot and finishes better, he'll be miles better than phoenix Diaw. Nance is a very poor man's Marion right now, but he could develop into something similar. Russell is no prime Nash (yet), but phoenix didn't have KD. Not saying to run MDA's chuck fest offense, im just excited about a potentially potent offense.

And with Byron's lockdown defensive schemes, we'll be set for years!

I say this in the game day messages all the time, Russ seems to always make the correct pick and roll pass but we have no one that can routinely do something with it. He needs a good pick and roll partner, shooters in the corners, and his game will open way up.

He would be such a fantastic point guard if he were allowed to have the ball for more than 3 seconds a possession. Admittedly, I don't know much about the Princeton offense even though the team has supposedly run it 4 out of the last 5 years so I went to Google images and they showed exactly what Russell does almost every play. Pass the ball to the SG then stand in the corner.

Yep. That's our play most of the time. When it's not, it's a pick and roll with awkward spacing that usually doesn't work.

Stealing some gifs from SS&R to demonstrate a few points.

    [IMG] [IMG]

Relocating - Most people understand the drive part of drive & kick, but the spot up shooter has responsibilities as well. Namely, it's dropping to the level of the ball and relocating to the open window that emerges as a result of the help defenders coming over. Russell needs to hit these shots at a higher clip, but he gets a lot of open looks as a result of having a good feel for relocation.

    [IMG] [IMG]

Reading PnR coverages - Both of these are soft hedges by Duncan. In the first one, Duncan doesn't commit to Russell, so he gets all the way to the basket. On the second one, Duncan does, and Russell takes the only open shot on the court. While Hibbert sets good screens, he rolls very slowly. Defensive PnR rotations basically work like this:

The hedging big needs to buy enough time for the guard to recover to the ball handler > The weak side wing needs to buy enough time for the big to recover to the rolling big.

So when Hibbert does/can't roll hard or quickly, it doesn't open up the skip pass. Exacerbating this spacing issue is that the PnR is run to the overloaded side, with Kobe on the wing and Nance (not exactly Kyle Korver either) in the corner for the 3. As a result, Russell has a single gap, which is very difficult to dribble penetrate into. Even if Duncan had been standard hedging instead of soft-hedging, there wouldn't have been a shot.

All of that is a long-winded way of saying that Russell's mid-range shot there is the only open shot on the court, because our spacing principles suck and a lack of PnR talent from Hibbert. Thankfully he made it.

This was from GoldenThroat @ LG about a month ago. Broke down some of our issues in the pick in roll.

even in an awful game tonight, he still showed a lot of flashes. the highlight of my game-viewing experience was listening to harpring backtrack after he had spent the early part of the game doubting the wisdom of drafting Russell.
