"wouldn't cooperate" probably means they wouldn't give us any picks. rui just wanted his bird rights transferred and us getting nothing. no sir. not how this works. you want your bird rights, get ballmer to send us something. otherwise, enjoy the mle for a lotto team. that 14 million also takes the clips out of the peyton watson bidding, right? don't think they'll have enough space to offer, and this probably means they're going to operate over the cap?
We got 4 years of production from him, I don’t think he had much value on the trade market at the deadline and we don’t win that playoff series against Houston without him. Sure in hindsight I’d rather have just dumped him for an additional second round pick in the asset chest, but some of the discourse I’ve seen around Rui being another example of asset mismanagement has no merit in my opinion. Not referring to your comment specifically, but for example on Twitter I’ve seen Rui lumped in with DFS as “See Rob trades second round picks for rentals that we don’t end up keeping” but there’s a world of difference between a half-season rental and a player who we already got several seasons of production from. Really sucks to see him going to the Clippers. I like Rui a lot, seems like such a good dude and despite his limitations for our fit I think he is a very good player that can really help a team in the right circumstances. Sucks that I now have to root for his demise.
same with kennard. we spent a second rounder and got a few wins, some good basketball, and some playoff magic. yay. it's ok that he moved on. we spent three seconds on rui years ago, and we got years of production out of him on some good teams. we actually tried to trade him on several occasions with no takers each time. joke ended up on those teams in certain ways. as for him going to the clips...eh, i'm used to them picking up our former players/guys with axes to grind against us. they literally care only about winning those 4 games each year. i'm just glad rui didn't go to SA, for my own sanity on these forums. watching him pull an horry there would have been brutal (even if i still think it was justifiable not to bring him back).
Sorry Rui I’m sure nothing you imagined after playing like you did in the all important who gives a bleep about reg season …. playoffs.
So much for Rui getting 20 million dollars a year. For all his flaws with defense/rebounding, I would've kept him if it was just 2/28. I'd rather have had Rui than Grimes since we got Carr. I hope Mamu/Grimes pans out because if they are duds, we are going to be stuck with them for 4 years. The clips replaced Kawhi Leonard with Kawaii Leonard
$14 million isn't a bad price for Rui. But I just don't see him as a title contending piece. When you can't rebound, block shots, or defend well as a 4, it's tough to see how Rui can contribute outside of hitting midrange jumpers and knocking down threes. He's a low volume three point shooter so what's the extra efficiency going to get you? 1-2 extra points per game? At the expense of giving up rebounds and being unable to guard the paint? Correct decision by Lakers to move on from him, IMO. Give playing time to gritty guys who can make Reaves/Luka's life easier by being more versatile. If Rui isn't scoring, what is he doing out there for you?
Great character. Hard working guy that never pouted, although not liking or striving in some roles he was put in. He always got the worst assignments to cover for the roster imbalance, especially due to Bron (and AD) and appreciate him for that. He didn't fit our team, even after Bron left. His lack of athleticism and rebounding doesn't fit what we need at the wing position when your stars are Luka/AR. It made sense to let him go. His insane playoff performance shouldn't get disregarded, but get overblown constantly. I share one last time he averaged 8/3/1 as a bench player last season. He didn't fit the role he was going to have here. In any case, type of guy I'm proud represented the Lakers and wish him the best, even at the Clippers. Arigato!
Rui’s a great guy, but he was never a great fit for us. We need a better defender/slasher/rebounder at that position and hopefully we’ll be able to find one.
i think both in a vacuum and on our team, grimes is the right choice. same with mamu. i don't think you can let carr impact decisions at this point. teams trying to win don't pencil late first rounders into the rotation.
i kind of find it hard to believe luka had a keep list, as that also implies a dump list. just doesn't seem like his style.
