I got sidetracked, addressing the new post about when Rui comes back. My original statement about starting Smart was about the first couple games of this season, where we should have started Smart over Gabe imo. (This is, after all, the Gabe thread, not the Rui thread, which is why this initially came up.)

Moot point for a while now, unfortunately.

 

I missed that subtlety, instead of Gabe in the short term, yeah, if he was healthy, no problem. But, I think the whole reason JJ is starting Gabe is to keep Smarts usage down and even that didn't work.

 

Smart played 23 and 21 minutes in the first 2 games, which he could have done whether starting/closing or coming off the bench. Doesn't and shouldn't matter.

Then Gabe got injured in Game 3 and only played 18 min, which is why Smart played 30 min. Then got injured.

Gabe is the reverse Phoenix: when you think he's alive, he becomes dead again

 

the beauty now is that he's an expiring. if he's , so what? hell, even better, as it would mean we're losing nothing when we trade him.

it was him being dead during the first damn year of his three-year contract that stung.

he f***ed up a great rotation where he was open in the corner but otherwise another strong performance from Gabe.

He's probably going to get hurt again but he looks much closer to a guy who was playing big minutes in an NBA finals

HIs size and inability to do anything other than hit an occasional 3 just comes back to bite you. Just no threat to drive, rebound, etc. Sigh

The Lakers need his archetype of player but he's just not good enough to fill the role consistently. It's a shame as when he plays like what the Lakers envisioned when they got him he makes a big difference

 

His game works 40% of the time, all the time.

 

We've got to protect JJ from himself at this point. Rob fire up the trade machine.

My goodness it feels like we will lose if he continues to play, we can’t have two net negatives in there, even Austin can’t cover for it

 

i understand gabe's appeal and think some situations are good for a guy like him, but i'm not sure ours is that one. almost need to move him to keep jj from his security blanket. it's not as bad as ham/prince/schroder, but i'm at the point where i think his minutes could go to smith/thiero and we may not see a dropoff.
