Timpf and Buha talked about the ESPN piece yesterday and I found myself agreeing with Timpf. LeBron may just be angry about the contract and not being offered his usual 1+1. Had he gotten that, things would probably be fine. He's not stupid; he understands things are different now with Luka. From his perspective, he had a good year (6th in MVP voting, 2nd Team All-NBA, still one of the 20 best players in the league at the absolute worst) and any other player in the league with that profile would get a 1+1 at the max if he asked for it. From the team's perspective, LeBron being this good now into his 40s is unprecedented so its hard to just assume he'll keep defying the age curve. Plus you have a new 26 year old franchise cornerstone that changes everything about your teambuilding.

That team also shares some blame. Why not just invite him to the stupid photo op dinner with Rob, JJ and Luka. Why not give him the same heads up about the sale to Walter. I don't see any downside in doing so.

It’s the offseason. I feel like this is much ado about nothing. LeBron’s wife wants him to retire in a year or two max. I think he does so as a Laker but who knows? Also I hardly put any stock in a Shelbourne report.

    He's busy.

Still don't get why he f***s with Dray considering he's almost seriously injured Bron at least a dozen times.

This. Agreed 100%. Just another BSPN hit piece to smear the Lakers.

He was 2nd team All NBA at 41. It’s not unreasonable to think your team of seven years will pursue you sign for more years.

instead, they didn’t even offer an extension. They have made him an expiring contract with zero control for the first time in his career that is not his doing. For one of the most supreme narcissists of all time, he must be beside himself.

the Lakers are ready to move on to the new era of Luka and not look back. I’m sure the all time stat padder is struggling to deal with being on a “show me you’re worth it contract”

has to be a blow to his sensitive ego

all that being said, all this was avoidable if the Lakers handled it better

I don’t get the angle that he has no power. He is a FA next year and can go anywhere he wants, the only thing he lost is the ability to force us to keep him with a player option.

But does anyone actually think if he is healthy next year we aren’t bringing him back for another if he wants too? Or the one after that?

I’m not some LeBron James fan, but he is still performing, is great for business and gives us a good shot to win.

he’s had the power to walk for years. But he’s also had the power to determine his salary here for years, too.

if he sees it like you do, he’d be less pissy right now.

I’m also not positive we want to bring him back at his salary unless he produces again. This is definitely different.

and shelbourne is again getting exposed as a “reporter”.

This is where we see things differently. Logically speaking I don’t see the downside of bringing him back.

He is still producing at a max contract level
He is still excellent for business
He is still the best second option we have available to us to compete with Luka
I don’t see how he stops us building a future with Luka tomorrow, by maximising their window today

Not having the PO allows us to prepare alternative plans in advance, including deciding in advance we won't sign him and do something else
With the PO, we would only find next June if he wants to stay or not and had less flexibility

We should also be the team able to pay him the most in summer, so we have leverage.

Unless he plays petty petty princess, then he needs to go. He can choose to be more of a problem than an asset if he wants. It’s up to him. Seems like he has started making choices on that topic already though.

    Agree

I'm not happy with the way he is going about this

He definitely could have handled it better and be more appreciative towards the Lakers, who have bent over backwards to please him
