my whole presence in this thread has been about this point. we still have a higher hit rate than almost any other team over the past decade or so, imo.

i think our success spoiled us a bit to where we think max lewis not being good means we suck at talent evaluation.

now, i will say evidence is mounting that we suck at development.

I've honestly never thought we were great at developing guys overall. It's part of why I don't like the thought of blowing things up completely and starting from scratch.

the fan base also has zero patience for such things. everyone yelling for it would be yelling for the opposite like three days in.

Better be a good trade is all I'm going to say. We passed on combining him with Bamba and/or Beas for anything. Passed on better players in the draft. The DLO, JHS + pick(s) better really knock out it of the park

I've always liked taking NBA ready guys while we're in the win now mode, even if they have a lower ceiling. Your window might be closed by the time you get to that point anyway.

It isn't a good look though when we're touting this new development program and before November decide that he's not going to be part of it. That Bronny is the face of that. One of the 17th pick and one is the 55th pick.

Yeah, the word out there was that Cam and Kobe were who we liked. Were scared away from Cam because of injuries, ironic considering JHS and the spinal injury (maybe that's part of why we're ready to dump him). Scouts were higher on both of them though. Rob allegedly made the final call there.

I don't get from any of them why we weren't all in on Podz or Jacquez. It should have been a two horse race between them and we should've had 1000s of hours of tape on Jacquez because you can see him from the back window.

Rob has been astronomically bad in the margins.

We let Huff and Pippen Jr walk, who are much better than Castelton and JHS.
Yeah, our shiny new “developmental plan” has gotten off to a real rough start.
I’m not saying that either of those two are going to have great NBA careers, but it’s obvious to everyone that they both have looked much better than Castleton and JHS so far.

our shiny new plan occurred AFTER we let the two good guys go. it is interesting that phase 1 of player development has been "get rid of the young players".

I tend to err on over-rating potential (I thought THT had a chance to be a very unique productive player, and I liked Max out of summer league last but changed my mind as he got more NBA minutes)

That being said I'm pretty good at least seeing if a player has a shot and I just don't know that they saw in JHS - he's just not explosive at all like Knecht or a Caruso, he's not particularly shifty with a great handle like Reaves, you can also have great deceleration like Luka even if you're top end speed isn't great and he doesn't have that, he's not a crafty finisher, and worst thing about him he doesn't use his size to punish smaller defenders like an Andre Miller or Deron Williams. Aesthetically as someone who loved Magic I just can't stand PGs who love to shoot a lot of pull-up shots and whose vision isn't exceptional at all.

You can see my early posts from this thread after watching him: I have no idea how anyone could watch him and say let's pick him over Whitmore especially with a mid to late first round pick. This was a colossal failure, a projected lottery pick (high lottery pick!) falls into your lap and you go with the guy who clearly has to add to his game significantly just to make it in the league because he doesn't have great physical gifts? When things don't go your way (Brick trade, losing Caruso, THT) and you have a chance to make up for it you take it. Especially with this new CBA - good young player who can play minutes are like QB on rookie contracts in the NFL now

his physical gifts are that he's very large for a pg. his problem is that he doesn't use his strength to his advantage at all.

and i hate to have to keep repeating: but at least 10 teams passed on whitmore. based on his supposed talent, one could argue 15 teams passed on him. everyone acting like there wasn't a good reason is ignoring facts, imo. you're telling all those teams' gms are just blind or didn't have information we had or something?

if someone was doing this here, he'd be getting killed instead of being proclaimed as a budding star or something.

I saw so many red flags early all over this pick and confirming it every time JHS plays made me crazy. Plus having Whitmore appear in NBA top ten almost every time…just s*** icing in fecal cake

Just because we declined doesn’t mean we can’t sign him back for less right?
