i get wanting to allow the new HC to bring in his own guys, but handy is more of a player development guy than an in game coach

this makes me wonder if they already have someone lined up

To be fair, I didn’t see anyone actually develop. I suppose we can blame Ham for lack of PT, but nobody grew their game from what I saw.

Reading through Reddit and some other sites of what fans thought of the firing of Budz at the time, a lot of it sounds like Ham. Most of the fans were sad to see him go, but also say it was time. A lot of them said he wasn’t great with young players, poor timeout management, poor lineup management, and he got regularly outcoached/out-strategized in the playoffs. Those all sound like Ham, and him being the guy who mentored him… I don’t think I want Budz here. There has to be better out there, there has to be.

IMO that was almost exclusively on Ham. Instruction is great but you need court time.

Yeah, I agree. It’s more an indication of how thin the ranks are. Our choices are underwhelming.

Ham was horrible with regular lineups. Fitting in player development minutes must have seemed like an impossibility.

It was shocking how overmatched he was. He got really exposed by other quality coaches. Truly embarrassing.

Dammit I missed this earlier. This is absolutely being reported today as the Clippers saying they know we want Lue and we can’t have him. That gives him a lot of negotiating power for a lot of money with them though, he can just say the Lakers are waiting on me if you don’t pay me. Damn, now I don’t know who the hell we’re gonna hire, and every single hire we have made since Phil has been a fail except Vogel.

Hey, we can always go with JJ and hope he is going to turn into a COTY-caliber rising star. High-risk, high-reward. Not my 1st choice, but the guy might be absolutely brilliant. I just don't think LA is the place for rookie coaches. In case of emergency, he can still suit up for a clutch 3, right?

Whoa. Rob fired Handy too. I wonder if Lebron approved. Must not be happy with JHS development or something. Good luck to them.

The report on Handy is we let him go to pursue a head coaching gig or pick his next spot, and so he’s not “forced on” whoever we hire next. The door is still open for him to return if he chooses to on the staff of whoever we do hire. But man if we’re cleaning house we should also look at the medical staff, our “2 weeks away from being 2 weeks away” doctors could probably be improved upon.

Man it'd be great to see them sent packing. I'd go down and tell them they're 2 weeks away from being fired.

Not interested in Bud or JJ.

Going to likely be another assistant IMO

    Good perspective.

The two best coaches in Lakers history are Phil Jackson and Pat Riley.

Riles was pulled out of the media booth by the Logo. Zero prior experience.

PJ had never coached in the NBA before the Bulls hired him.

I’ll take talent and ability over experience every time. Think of it this way; Ham is experienced. So is Byron, Rambis, Luke, etc.

I’m now fascinated with hiring JJ, he’s a smug a** hole like Phil and arguably the better player, he might work as a long term coach ala Steve Kerr

After how many times Lebron killed Budenholzer's team: i'd be shocked if he is hired. Cavs with Lebron annilihated them
