lol, i was going to mention in my prior post that i wondered whether andre miller would have been a starting nba pg right now. iirc, miller was an excellent finisher around the rim despite his athleticism issues, and jhs hasn't been that yet.

Andre Miller was who I was hoping Deangelo Russel would pattern his game after, due to their mutual woeful lack of athleticism. The difference was Andre Miller had a high bball IQ and had old man game mastered right from the beginning. Deangleo has the skills but lacks the focus that slow footed earthbound guards have to have to be consistently good in this league. I'm curious to see how Jalen will fare in the league, I missed summer league unfortunately.

he's got great control of the ball, imo. really strong off hand, too.

his jumper's ugly; there's no getting around it. once again, it will come down to defense. if he can defend nba pgs, he'll stick around. no star potential here, but he's a #17 pick, not a lotto. and despite him being physically developed, you can see that he needs some time playing the pro game to figure out what he can and can't do.

btw, i still don't see the "lack of burst". i think he looks slower because people don't respect his jumper. and they shouldn't! but he can definitely accelerate in a hurry from what is see. but when your defender is two steps back already, it doesn't do a lot for you. wonder if he might get better chances when surrounded by better players.

and again i'll say that the g-league is a good place to work on all of this.

Jason Kidd couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn when he came into the League and turned into a very good shooter later on in his career.

well, yes, and i think there's a lot of other examples of guys who became passable to good standstill shooters after not being able to hit anything (bruce brown is a good recent example). but the issue is that even beside that, jhs doesn't have anything else that jumps off the page at you. kidd was a generational passing talent and brown already had a rep as an outstanding defender when he came into the league.

tony parker didn't develop much of a long range shot (he became respectable when left wide open over time), but he was an elite finisher in the paint.

anyway, jhs is 19. there's time for him to develop in all sorts of ways. he's just not going to be the near immediate hit that many of our recent picks have been.

That’s my point- he wasn’t drafted to be the immediate impact player. Our scouting department has done nothing but make wise choices in the recent future. We live in a culture of instant gratification in nearly every area of life. We literally have seen the kid play in four summer league games and most here have already written him off as a bust.

yeah, it's way too early for that. if he looks like this next year in summer league, then it will be safe to start throwing that term around.

Yeah, it's silly. Things I like about JHS: handles and control at the PG position most importantly, defense secondarily, good passing, low turnovers, good size, nice midrange game, strong work ethic. The only thing I dislike is his long range shot - it's rough. But that's something he can improve on over time. He's not going to get much time out there this year with DLo and Gabe Vincent taking up the minutes, and that's how it should be. But he can put in time in the G League and get better.

I do get it that folks are upset we didn't take a chance on Cam Whitmore. The talent is there but we weren't the only ones to pass on him and there's got to be a reason for him falling so far.

I still think best talent available should have been the call during draft night, Whitmore proved he was a baller in SL probably because he fell so low he needed to prove himself, showing some semblance of that Mamba Mentality. I think the scouting department and Rob played it safe and we have a pick with mediocrity written all over him.

    Yeah, our Scouting Department sucks!
Let’s replace them because they don’t know what they are doing.
Place Kurt and Linda there instead!

if we got a mediocre nba player with the 17th pick, it's a big win.

17th pick has produced the following since 1999
Rotational players: trey murphy, divincenzo, schroeder, shumpert, hibbert, josh smith, desmond mason
Two stars: Jrue Holiday, Danny Granger

9/24: so a little better 1/3rd of the time. Honestly this was better then what I was expecting. Probably some statistical oddity to this, as 16th pick was a lot worse count 6-7 rotation guys and no stars

I’m over the Whitmore thing, is what it is, rooting and hoping for JHS to develop now. That said, your point true, and is exactly why if a supposed top 5 pick falls to 17, you probably take them. Mediocre players are what you can expect at 17, so if you have a gamble on much better potential one, do it, there’s almost no risk. Again, I’m over it, but I wouldn’t have played it safe there.

Well with LeBron and Rui and Vanderbilt and knowing they wanted to bring in Prince and Reddish …. and also maybe expecting that DLO may be going out at the deadline in trade for another important piece, “maybe” Whitmore made less sense depth wise than JHS who obviously we seem to like as another big point guard who they’re hoping can contribute minutes after DLO is gone to help with the depth handling the ball, making plays and playing some D. Plus he does have the NBA ready body they don’t have to wait on as well.

if almost every team in the league didn't pass on him, i'd have been more alarmed. i wanted to get him at that pick, and i was never high on jhs, but man...so many teams that could use a player like him passed. i feel like there's got to be something there. and maybe not, or maybe the draft slip is the wake up call he needed or whatever, but it's hard for me to believe that many people got it that wrong.

again, this isn't some under-the-radar guy that just snuck up on people. this was a highly touted player who was mocked in the top 5 pretty much all year long. so he had a ton of eyes on him.

i guess the closest cautionary tale is kawhi leonard, who was similarly projected near top-5 but dropped to 15. but most other guys who dropped all the way out of the lotto (pierce dropped to 10) ended up dropping for good reason.

anyway, not going to lie, on this date i'd definitely be happier had we taken the flier on whitmore. really felt like we settled on jhs because our actual targets were gone and we couldn't find a trade.
