Guaranteed contracts are BAD. He'll get 80mil for playing what? 30-40 games? Feel bad for him but also for the Bulls.
I'm fine with guaranteed cause non-guaranteed deals in the NFL can be ugly. Their players are disposable. I think if a NBA player misses at least half the season their salary should not count against the cap while they're out. Currently, the injury exception is the mid level/half the player's salary, I think that needs looked at.
yeah, it's tough, though because you'd have to limit the contract of the replacement player to that of the injury duration, right? otherwise, you could create another golden state situation. imagine a max player misses a year due to an acl and you get to sign another max guy in his stead...but you get to retain the second guy when the first guy returns. and if that second contract is contingent...who's signing it? can that contract be traded? what was the old darius miles situation? anyone remember that? he got written off the cap as an injury, but the second someone else signed him, his number went back on that team's cap, right?
Yeah, the verbiage would have to be very specific to avoid these loopholes. I'd give them teams two options if it's an extended injury like this. They can shelf them for half a season or the whole season. If it's half season, they can reevaluate the progress at that point and if they're not coming back then put them back on it for the remainder. This matters when negotiating with their replacement because not a lot of players are going to want to take a half season contract before the season (in/mid-season is obviously different). As far as the financial slot, yeah it only works if the replacement contract is voided when the injured player is able to return and they HAVE to bring the injured player back even if the replacement is better (if we lost Russ when he was here, there's 100 players you could fill that void with who would've been better for us) . They might be able to talk the replacement player to stay on for a minimum deal for the remainder of the year. If you can overpay them during the hardship, a minimum on the back end could balance out their salary. I think it also has to only apply for a single player replacement, otherwise you're getting a potential second free agency. This primarily is to help this smaller market teams who struggle enough to land players. When they lose one of those players they begged or overpaid to come there, they're a bit f***ed.
