No one thinks he will retire, here's a couple sources quotes from the piece
But if he does, Pincus walks through just what that looks like for us in the article.

That much is obvious. Though in reality, I don't think a player saying he's gonna think about his future after playing 20 years is anything to be shocked about.

it's a little weird because he's on the books for 50 million next year. if he had a player option, it would be a little less weird.

this guy's got a boner about it:

    https://www.theringer.com/nba/2023/5/23/23734113/lebron-james-retirement-rumors-lakers-warriors

i still think it's him trying to force rob's hand again, and i think rob's message back ("he deserves the space to make his choice" or whatever) was a nice subtle "i'm still not selling out the franchise for you".

the speculation in the piece is that lebron might demand a trade, specifically to the warriors. so that he can play with draymond and steph...because AD is disappointing (that section of the article is incredibly weak and disingenuous, right down to suggesting AD didn't guard jokic because others were better at it...give me a break, man).

anyway, i feel the same as i did when he was pulling this s*** last year: call the bluff again. he won't retire. and demanding a trade based on the idea that the lakers aren't doing everything to compete (what was your 3pt% and attempt rate in the playoffs again?) would be a bad look. lebron knows that. let him stew and make the moves you think make sense. once again, him signing that extension is biting him in the butt.

LeBron isn't going anywhere and the talk is just that. LeBron and the Lakers drive clicks and engagement and no one is interested in the Nuggets so here we are. The NBA really needs to work on actually getting its media partners to promote the game instead of endless dumb debates about who the GOAT is, who is an alpha, trades that are almost impossible under league rules, etc. Its just ridiculous and its hurting the product. I want to say I'm stunned they can't see this but I'm not.

LeBron will get surgery/rehab his foot, make vague comments that drive his own engagement (because clicks mean dollars for him too), and then we will see him in the fall because he doesn't want to leave the Lakers and his son is at college literally a couple of miles from Crypto.

    narcissists are going to narcissist

    it's what they do

This is common for long time stars to start to deal with this topic

    Brett Farve
    Tom Brady
    Aaron Rodgers

just some recent examples that come to mind

i'd add that the nuggets have been around for years now, and they've always ended the season in disappointment. when you're a midsized market with players that don't really energize the base, so to speak, and you keep toying with being good and then not getting there, people are going to talk about other things.

and if they win, people also won't fawn as much as they're hoping. but jamal murray said it: it will make the title even more rewarding for them individually, i think

anyway, lebron called them one of the best teams he's played; pretty much everyone from the lakers side was just like "the best team won". what more do you want?

I hate when Lebron settles for threes but his shortcomings in the clutch are always magnified and blown way out of proportion. The facts are that he comes through more than most players.

My main concern with him has always been at the ft line, where he's always been shaky. He improved there this year however. Regardless Kwame Brown is the wrong player to be calling anyone out.

When is Lebron getting surgery for his foot? I would think he would do it right away to have enough time to get to 100% by training camp?

He probably wants to enjoy his break a bit. If he has surgery right away, he has to go into rehab and his basically got no off time. I imagine he does it after the finals, or maybe even end of June.

I think he said that if he needed surgery that people wouldn’t know about it. So maybe he already got it.
