I’ll see your 5 minutes and raise 2 and copy paste it to end of 1st half as well. But really really want him gone before deadline for pieces of value. We all knew he’d revert to mean of worst times for dumb inexcusable for a veteran HOF player things done on a basketball court.

No way we keep him.. You have to move Russ now & try to get something in return.
He's not resigning for the MLE, & getting a couple serviceable players &/or picks in a trade is better than letting him walk.

i'm really not trying to be a jerk, but i don't see why people are expecting a return from russ. as i said in the other thread, letting him walk may be better than the options we end up having. i'm hoping for something different, but i'm also very worried that jeanie's first directive is to get under the tax next year, and that's going to hamper russ trades, imo.

People are going to hate on her for that. But it’s smart. If she can get under the tax for a year or two, then she can go over it for 3 years without the repeater tax measures that are just absolutely terrible.

I don’t think people understand the impact of the repeater tax situation. Let me know if anyone wants a quick primer on it.

If the repeater tax is an issue, she shouldn’t own the greatest franchise in the history of the league, a billionaire should. You don’t run the Lakers like a mom and pop shop.

I agree that we shouldn’t be run as a mom and pop shop. But that goes for our coaching staff, our front office, our infrastructure and facilities. We should also spend to put together championship teams.

But I don’t agree that it means we should be spending 100-150m in tax money yearly. Do you not get that it was designed to cripple teams - no one, not even a billionaire is going to be paying that much tax yearly on a roster. And there are rumours that they’re going to raise the punitive taxes even higher.

Watch golden state after curry retires, they’ll be in debt and mediocre for years trying to pay it off. Being a top franchise in this league now means straddling the tax payer line too. That’s why our scouting department is going to be so key - unearthing rotation players for low wages.

Why would you keep Russ if you can use his contract this year to upgrade the team with a couple of players that could help right away? Otherwise, you just get Russ for cheap next year, and I'm not sure how much that helps.

Which trade though? That’s the obvious thing to do, so why haven’t we done it?

Because no trade out there is any good. Unless you want to trade Reaves, two firsts and Russ for Turner and Hield.

Well, we don't have to trade him today. Maybe we can do it later, there will be opportunities, I'm sure. And no, I don't want to trade Reaves, because he's a contributor and exactly the player we need. On the other hand, I would trade a pick or even two if we can clearly upgrade the team for the future. It doesn't matter that much, ultimately: have a potentially promising pick (or two), or get some players who aren't too old and who are willing to stay with us for a while.

3 of GS titles have come because they were willing to pay huge amount of tax and in particular the last one. They've made the correct bet is that even if they suck sans Curry they have a great fanbase, a new stadium, and the rep around the league similar to Buss's lakers that they will take care of you and will what it takes to win.

The thing is the Lakers can pull in even more money than GS due to the historic fanbase across the league: you know how you lose money on the Lakers by being cheap and not getting people into the seats. GS chose to take on a huge amount of salary even when they missed the playoffs so that they could get assets and it turned out to be a great addition - title number 5 for that franchise

this is where i disagree with svtzr. he's right that the tax is big and designed to stop this stuff, but being the lakers is sort of about being impervious to that. the argument that nobody is impervious hasn't proven true yet. gs did let some vets go this summer to avoid tax, and they're paying for it on the court in some ways. but they and the clips are still blowing through the tax like nobody's business and won't miss the playoffs solely because they blow through the tax like no one's business--not even the great tyronn lue, mother of dragons, could win with our role players if lebron and AD were out.

There's a reason one of these guys has three straight with 0 turnovers.

In all seriousness I just don’t think Russ will be back. I don’t know why he’d even want to come back especially at a lower price.

I think he will land somewhere. I think OKC would bring him back on a reasonable deal.

now that he's accepted a bench role, teams will want him at the mini mle, imo.

Yeah agree with mini MLE possibly if he continues to be open to the 6th man / emergency starter role. But seriously doubt any team would give him a full MLE. He costs teams wins at times with the boneheaded plays on offense and defense in crucial parts of games. Regardless of whatever else he might have done good in the game to have it be that close.
