Oh, that's a new jumper? Alright then, that makes all the difference in the world. He's going to be Steph once the season starts. Because shooting in practice is the same as shooting in an actual game.

Seriously, just prepare for more awful shots next season if he's here.

Nah it will be different this year …. those clearly were Vogel’s fault. ;)

nba players are automatic in practice.

A set shot looks better on Russ but I think bad habits will kick in during the actual games and he'll begin jumping high and aiming on his shots again.

Only change to that shot... he doesn't jump 40 inches like an idiot. That's what makes his "in game jumper" so bad.
It's tough as hell to jump as high as you can and make a shot, i know, i tried LOL.

The keys to a good shot is a repeatable, reliable and consistent motion. When you jump like Westbrook does, your shot starts to change when you don’t get the same lift as your legs tire.

Agreed. A few things of note that I like. First is not jumping so hard on every shot his legs will last longer, he will be more accurate and more consistent. Those two things will allow him to have more confidence in his shot which will also help. As someone noted it is easy to revert back during stressful times but that is why you just keep practicing. The Most important thing to me about all this is that Russ recognizes the need for change. Maybe, just maybe, Ham's consistent positive talking in his ear is being heard. This is the first thing I have seen to suggest that. So it is a small step but big to me. Wouldn't it be a pleasant surprise if Russ came out and was a reliable 3 and D guy...lol. Please do not ban me from the site.

i'd have to see the difference between these and previous practice shots from russ to render an opinion. as people have said, shots look different in and out of games. for all i know, he's always shot like this in workouts.

but i'd love to believe that russ has committed himself to becoming a better shooter. that would be huge. i know i've been trying to get him out, but i'm not actively rooting against him. if he's successful, we will be.

Here's him last year shortly after getting traded to the Lakers.

(It's a shame you can't embed youtube shorts videos)

Every year guys like Westbrook, Simmons, Adams etc.. have practice videos hitting shots. I'm done getting my hopes up lol.. NBA players are just automatic in practice.

Russ has been practicing this style of shooting since the Houston year - so that's roughly 3 offseasons? He also shoots like this in warm ups. I don't understand why he reverts back to the high jump style during games.

But I'm not holding out hope he becomes a good shooter, that's a low probability bet. I do think he can still rack up some assists and attack the basket though.

He's an instinctive player so he just reverts back to habits when the muscle memory kicks in.

ah, yeah that's the same practice shot, which isn't the game shot.

i get it to some extent, i can remember when i played i jumped quite a bit on my shot, which really helped me get it off against bigger guys and do the same kind of extreme pull ups that russ does (he was better at those several years ago, which my knees also understand). from three, i couldn't shoot the same shot, and it was hard to switch modes in the game. in practice, i could nail 17/25 around the arc, but i probably shot 30% in the games. my pull up inside the three was money in either place.

now that i'm old and can't jump as well, i pretty much shoot the same shot everywhere, and i'd imagine that would translate better.

He has always jumped way too high on his jumpers so I agree (I said the same things last year in multiple posts). It really helped Kidd and Rondo not only extend their careers but also adjust to the modern NBA.

Do I think he sticks with it though: nope. The video from last year looks exactly like this year's video. Just one of the most frustrating players I've watched: just so many WTF moments over and over again

There’s always a slim chance he does shoot the set shot.

Even if he improves his 3 point shooting by 5% (which is a lot), he also has to improve on:
    1) shot selection
    2) turnovers
    3) defense
    4) finishing at the rim.

And yes every player has things to work at but as a lead guard, he was awful at all these things last year which lead guards are leat supposed to be competent at. An improved 3 point shooter just makes him playable and not in any way good still

C'mon, let Russ be Russ guys...

He will do all those things again. We just hope it's in a context where it doesn't hurt the team as much.
I only ask him to improve his defense. If he does that, it's already great

Russ will be our best player this season, he'll also play in 75 games minimum. It won't help since AD and Bron will go down with injuries. I saw it in a dream...
