They can agree in principal to trade him but yes he's not gonna be opting in early.

The other reason for a delay is he doesn’t want to be traded and doesn’t want to help us make it happen during the draft when trades are easier to pull off, before players are contracts/actual figures and are still just picks. He could not want to go to a bad situation, and/or just want to stick it to us out of pettiness. There’s no way in hell he doesn’t opt in to 47 million dollars, but I won’t be surprised if he does it on the last possible day.

Nobody walks away from that kind of money. He will wait until the last hour of the last day.
Remember, it’s everyone else’s fault he had a bad season.

I completely understand this line of thinking, but I’m not happy about going from young Championship players plus picks, to worst trade in Laker history, to serviceable players who are good enough to not negatively impact your team.
I know, it’s where we are, but I don’t have to like it.

i guess i think that's in both parties' best interest. his date is still before FA, so it does nothing to us to wait.

He won't get that bag anywhere else, so of course he's going to opt in.

Ham already has his buy in on sacrificing for the team and playing defense first.

    What could possibly go wrong?

I don't think we are even seriously trying to trade Westbrook. If the FO was as hellbent on getting rid of him as the media said, he'd be in Houston right now.

Yeah sure we offered Rus and Tucker for Brogdon. Along with Hield and Turner too LOL.

I think we are being smart and position ourselves as a buyer, not seller. Westbrook is an asset, not a liability. That expiring is juicy.

It's difficult to keep the composure and think rationally, during the season I wasn't able to see it this way. But now I can see that we can get something good for him, even if it takes longer.

i think we were desperately trying to move him from december to february, and cooler heads prevented us from doing something stupid (the wall trade).

i agree with the above, depending on what constitutes "good". it will be something worse than many are thinking, imo, but will still qualify as good to me. again, can't overstate how negative russ's impact was last year, on and off the court. total anchor. just don't bring in another anchor, and you've already won. this is why i don't like any kyrie ideas. why get a shinier anchor?

Westbrook sucks and the likelihood is that he'll be on the roster when the season starts; I just don't see the Lakers taking on long-term contracts and losing their flexibility going forward.

I could be wrong, but we shall see.

if lebron signs an extension, we have no flexibility. if he doesn't, we may not be an attractive destination. i'd take on the salary, no questions. the immediate FA horizon is pretty bleak, anyway.

what i don't want to do is start trading picks 7 years out.

so yeah, give me your bloated role player contracts. i shall take them. all of them!

That's the point. They'll sacrifice that flexibility for LBJ.

They aren't going to do it for role players. Won't happen, IMO.

And I'm in favor of trading him for depth, I just don't see it happening.

A lot can change in 3 years. Most here didn't even expect LBJ to sign here when he was an FA. Most here balked at it.

I am just guessing they'll want to keep their flexibility to add another star player rather than be hamstrung by some role players that are still under contract.

    That's my guess.

    We'll find out soon enough.
