I just realized that Kendrick Nunn is a Klutch client.

For some reason this really bothers me

Why? Not if he gets healthy for next year.

IF he returns to form and his healthy next year, it's a huge win, actually. had he been good this year, we're in the monk situation where lots of teams have more money to offer him. he plays well next year, and we have his bird rights and get his production at about half market value for that one year (so maybe we get our lost cash back?).

i just really want to hear what happened when it's all over. i mean, losing a whole year is pretty rare even for major injuries that you can see happen.

Yeah let’s not rewrite history. Signing Nunn for the mini-MLE was widely considered a steal. When we found out he had a player option on year 2, most of us assumed that he would for sure opt out and get a more lucrative offer somewhere else this summer.

So yeah, the injury has been a bummer and I understand being a little skeptical given the mysterious nature of his injury and Klutch ties.

But unless they’re covering up something major, I’d have to assume he’ll likely be 100% by next year. In which case him opting in and us having a solid back-up PG locked up for cheap will be great for us.

assuming he's healthy, i think he's the starter, tbh. if russ is still here, it will mean he's accepting a diminished role (don't expect it).

Assuming Monk is gone because we can't afford him, then Nunn would be essentially his replacement. I'm ok with that. Well, that's if he still isn't dealing with this inexplicable bone bruise when training camp starts again.

i'm repeating myself, but i'm not so sure monk's gone. he seems to like it here, and i'm actually not sure he's shown a LOT more this year than he has in other years. he improved for sure, but just not amazingly. caruso was a more valuable player going into last offseason, and he didn't even fetch a full MLE.

but that didn't stop us from not paying him. *cries in team defense*

anyway, we'll see what the market has for him and what we do with our bigger pieces. but signing monk to a nunn deal isn't completely out of the question, imo. just a matter of how much others offer and what kind of trust has been developed. we'd have his early bird after year 1.

Yeah on further thought, I think you’re right. On paper Nunn is actually a very good fit for a Lebron team’s starting PG. He can shoot and do some basic pick and roll playmaking. If he can compete defensively, that’s really all we need.

The PG rotation isn’t really a huge concern of mine. I think we’re learning that the idea of Lebron deferring and being a mostly off-ball player as he ages just isn’t reality. At this point I’m confident that up until he retires, the offense will always naturally gravitate to him being the primary playmaker. Doesn’t make sense to dedicate a big chunk of salary cap into a prototypical playmaking PG if they can’t play off-ball and shoot. They just become redundant alongside Lebron.

So if we could add some decent depth behind Nunn, I think we’re more than okay with him at the front of the PG rotation. In an ideal world if we could convert Russ into 3 role players, I would hope that return prioritized wings and versatile bigs over a PG to replace Russ

This summer is where I think we'll get to see if Rob is cut out for this job or not. We can field a competitive roster, health permitting, next year if he is half way competent or it will be his last season with us. Vogel will be gone, we can't blame him. Bron and AD will still be fireproof. Even if Russ is still here, he doesn't have the weight anymore to hang it on him. Next year's scapegoat is Rob. Time to put up or shut up.

I want Monk back but only if Russ and/or THT get traded. We would have too much invested in our backcourt with too many holes otherwise. Ideally we trade Russ for a couple serviceable players with longer deals (at least 1 wing under 31 who can hit a 3 and play D... I've rambled elsewhere about the importance of the middle class of the roster). Get Monk on a wink and nod deal to take care of him in 1 year. Then Nunn can start and take Russ' spot in the starting 5 and give us some spacing and take the load of Bron as needed.

If we run it back with those under contract (God help us all!) then yes, Nunn will absorb much of the Monk role.

agree rob's going to be gone next year if it's not fixed this time. but that also could mean ownership stays out of the way and tells klutch the same. help if you're called, otherwise, it's rob's show. that's how i'd play it. and i'd tell him--sorry we screwed up in the past, now it's your turn, full autonomy. but that means full responsibility. if i'm rob, i take it but i ask for a two-year window.

as for roster moves, no you can't have THT and russ. they're very similar players at this point, imo. obviously moving russ would be great, but if not, moving THT for a big would be my move. not a muscala big, but someone who can play 20mpg credibly. i'd even take a vet on his last legs, tbh. would have to see who's out there that could fit the bill.

it's best case scenario for us. worst case, he's still injured but his contract can be traded. if he walks, it's not like we get that money back. we're over the cap and have only the mini-mle to work with. i'd be mad if he opted out, tbh.

I’m sure Nunn looked at it like that and didn’t want to be out there.
