Note how Phily wants to move up. Getting weirder...I think we keep it simple: Okafor, Joe Young, Norman Powell.

if philly wanted to pick russell at #2 and we traded for him what could we potentially pry from them? ive heard we could ask for our pick back but would that be enough compensation?

I think a trade with them would only make sense if it is initiated by Philly, assuming that we prefer Okafor. They would call Mitch on draft night, after Minny picks Towns, and say "Hey, as you probably know, we really want Russell. If you can secure him for us, whether by picking someone else or via a trade with our #3, we'd give you back your 2016 1st round pick"

It would be a no-brainer for us, and Philly isn't losing much because that Top 5 protected pick lost alot of value after this year. (would likely be in the mid to late teens next year) I think the risk of striking out on Russell is a much bigger concern for Philly. However, I can't think of any scenario where the Lakers make a call to Philly.

Maybe it's smoke and mirrors and they'd screw us and take Okafor instead if they were 2. Probably not, they really want Russell. But yeah just keep it simple. Then again Mitch is a magician.

If this ends up being revisited and #2 & Randle is the price, I'd do something like #2, Randle, S&T Hill for Cousins, #6, S&T Tobias Harris. Then #6 for #10, Deng, Chalmers. Take Stanley Johnson #10.

    Clarkson/Chalmers
    Kobe/Young
    Deng/Johnson
    Harris/Black/Kelly
    Cousins/Sacre

Good God NO!! [IMG] Okafor and Randle by way of the lottery and draft day gods are the rarest of Big Man talent and potential torch bearers / leaders / alpha dogs for the Lakers in the future, starting now. More rare than Deangelo. There will be another of him next year likely. Maybe. In my humble opinion of course. [IMG]

    This won't happen.

The Kings will replace the coach before their franchise player. Good coaches are dime-a-dozen. A Top 3 center is not.

It is incredibly unlikely the Kings would fire Karl before trading Cousins. Cousins is a young malcontent.

Karl is a well respected coach that has been around for decades. He was JUST hired into this position. Firing him now is condemning that front office to patsy coaches for a long, long time. What respectable coach would take that position knowing they could be fired again in months? What coach would want to step into that office after they let go of an old timer like Karl with no hesitation at all?

It's more likely they wait patiently to find a package that works for the team, then jettison Cousins asap. Not only has he caused them a ton of problems, but once he's gone they can start to build a stronger culture.

    1. Good coaches will line up for that spot. Getting fired is good in the NBA. You get payed for the rest of the contract for doing nothing.

    2. Cousins is the perfect excuse for not performing up to expectations. Another good motivation for coaches to send in their applications.

    3. Karl doesn't exactly have an impeccable reputation himself. (ie Nuggets) And he is respected, but it's not like he's on a Larry Brown level. I mean come on, he doesn't even have a ring after all these years. He was a bad hire as predicted from the getgo. Fire him and move on.

On one hand I agree. On the other, this isn't like the normal world. If you're dream job is "NBA Head Coach" there are only 30 spots. I really don't know what the Kings do to be honest.

No good coaches are lining up to go what is clearly a dumpster fire. What good coaches desperately wants to get involved in what's happening over there? You think Thibs is so intrigued by Cousins that he's willing to fight not only Cousins himself, but yet ANOTHER inept front office? No. There's no great coaches lining up for that position. You're looking at the Del Negroes, the Dunleavys, and the Mike Browns. Good luck with that.
The league isn't full of coaches looking for excuses for why they suck. The league is full of coaches with pride trying their hardest to be competitive. Coaches won't line up with the thought "well at least if Cousins is here and I suck, we'll have an excuse". Besides, how can the draw of Cousins also be the reason they don't think they'll succeed? If you take this job it's because you think you can turn Cousins into a winner, not an excuse.
He's more well respected than the D'Antonis and the Browns of the world, I can tell you that right now. Remember the backlash the Lakers got from the media just from firing Brown early? They really took a hit to their reputation with that move among professionals. Karl might not be loved by some players, but most front offices still view him in a very positive light.

Karl has more wins than Brown, a better win percentage, and has coached in the NBA just as long (longer starting next year). He's definitely well respected despite the negative press he's getting right now. Firing him unceremoniously for a malcontent like Cousins makes this laughing stock of an NBA front office into maybe the least respected front office in all of sports. It's not going to happen.

If you were an NBA coach looking for a position like that, would you take it? You'd move your family to Sacramento knowing that at any moment you might lose your best player, your GM and FO might draft or sign a player that either sucks (Stauskas) or is an awkward fit (Derrick Williams), and hell you might get fired at any moment?

I'd rather take an assistant job with Gentry or Skiles or Hoiberg and wait for the next available position. If Sacramento is willing to jerk around a guy who is 6th in total wins as a Head Coach, what are they going to do to me?

They'll find coaches willing to take the position, but they won't be good or great coaches. Hello Mike Dunleavy! Welcome to the Kings (and they'd be lucky to get him).

Karl really put the front office in a tough spot. If he would've kept quiet on his willingness to deal Cousins, he probably would've gotten a good deal. Now, I doubt it considering everyone knows how desperate he is to trade him, how upset Cousins is, and the lack of uniform within that whole organization.

OK I get how you feel about Karl. And yeah, the great ones like Thibs (ones that can pick and choose) likely won't sign there. But there are still good ones like Scott Brooks, Alvin Gentry, Mark Jackson. They'd much rather be a NBA head coach than be a broadcaster or unemployed. And if they have pride like you say, they'd see Cousins as a challenge.

And I think you are overthinking the situation with the Kings front office. They made a mistake by hiring Karl. Same mistake that even the Lakers made recently. Replacing the coach is not something to be ashamed of, when the greater good is keeping your best player. I would applaud them for making the hard but right decision. Reputations are merely what others think you are; they come and go.

My understanding is that the snake in the grass comment comes because Karl has been trying to trade Cousins for a while behind the scenes.

All this leaked stuff apparently came from Cousins' camp in an attempt to force Cousins out the door. Basically Cousins got word that Karl was trying to convince the FO to trade him and to get back at him he released all this private information to make Karl look bad.

No party here is blameless. In fact ALL parties come out of this looking like jerks.

If I'm Scott Brooks or Alvin Gentry I pass on this job. Mark Jackson maybe has to take it, but he's not as good a coach as the others (or at least doesn't have the accolades).

I think you're underestimating the ineptitude of the Kings front office. This is a front office in complete disarray. What I've heard is that around the NBA they're viewed as the most incompetent front office out there. Their owner has pushed them to make personnel decisions against the better judgement of the other front office officials. The owner tried to force the team to run a 4-on-5 system offensively because his daughter's high school team did it. I'm not kidding, that's a thing that happened. Reggie Evans stood on the other end of the court while the team tried to play defense 4-on-5 that happened in an NBA game!

Their General Manager left and took a lesser position in Denver just to get away from them. That front office is an absolute mess and nobody wants to be involved there right now. Firing Karl would be the nail in the coffin to getting a competent person in there to try to clean up the mess.

I'm trying to remember who had tweeted it, but it was a tweet saying that Karl has actually been contacting other teams and such trying to trade Cousins. I mean talking to FO is one thing, but reaching out to other teams when the FO is reluctant isn't the best thing to do. If that was true, it was easy for the info to come back around to Cousins camp.
