I knew he had a good game offensively, but man I was caught up in the game, I didn’t know he was 10-13 for 27 points. We needed all of that short-handed, good stuff. He can’t play defense to save his life, but hey, sometimes you take what you can get, the good with the bad.
It may be handy in the playoffs Monk will be this kind of player. Occasionally will go off and we will unleash him. Most nights he is dispensable if the shot is not falling. These type of scorers sometimes identify flaws on the opponent defensive schemes and exploit it. It was one of those games
He's a good shooter and makes some very athletic plays other guys would struggle with. Hit some big shots too. Has almost unlimited range. Yeah, he doesn't play much D, but when Johnny Blaze can't do it, and you're missing other guards/wings, Monk is important for us. He needs to play, see if he's hot early.
Everyone kept bringing up the "duel" between Monk and Herro. Herro had 27pts on 22 attempts 4 reb 3 asst in 42 mins +/- -8 Monk had 27pts on 13 attempts 6 reb 3 asst in 35 mins +/- +12 How about straight-up "outplayed?" FFS who gets 27pts on 13 attempts? Hell, Westbrook shot similar to Herro.
Getting to know Monks game a little more, I didn’t realize how much of a momentum/rhythm guy he is. It doesn’t surprise me that the data says he plays well with Melo and Russell, those guys have this quality as well. When we are rolling, these 3 guys will look unstoppable. When it’s bad, it will look pretty bad. As a basketball fan I just enjoy watching his offensive game, he has some moves that a lot of players don’t. Kind of like an angry Lou Williams.
I also get Lou Williams vibes from Monk. Reminds me a lot of his game. Monk has a little bit more range though and more hops.
still on jr smith comp train. williams is just so much more skilled as ballhandler and can basically hit any shot and create on any possession. they're equally problematic on defense, i guess, but monk definitely can't create looks off the dribble in isolation like lou, who, in fairness, is one of the better ones i've seen at that particular thing.
I thought he outplayed him too. I think some are just used to a guy on the other team going off with no one on our side seeming to match the energy or effort. That’s the only way I can really describe it. Every time it seemed like Herro was getting going Monk (and Bradley and Ellington to an extent) answered the call. it was awesome to watch.
Think that definitely played a role in his success. He played free, wasn't playing panicked ball, and wasn't looking over his shoulder because there was no one else. Normally a missed assignment or bone head play, he's worried he'll rightfully get pulled. It's going to be very interesting when... if we ever are fully healthy because all our guards (except Russ) will be on a very short leash.
16/2/4 against SAS. Shot 50% for 3, 60% overall. He has his ups and downs, but for a bench microwave... yeah, this is solid. Maybe we should try more Monk+THT lineups. I think there's a good synergy there with the two youngsters.
