I hate how it takes games like these for AD to show up. Like why can't he just play like he's capable of from the get-go and not respond with a monster game after being publicly shamed. Maybe he's a glutton for punishment.

Seems like a lot of the L's are on you lately...

yeah, doesn't look to me like anybody can claim they really came out and killed it today.

if AD had said "i'm good, rest of y'all figure it out", would that have pleased everyone?

phx was favored in this game for good reason. tons of rest, knew who they were playing, zero pressure. they might get game 2, too. game 3 is where this series gets interesting to me.

but AD admitting he wasn't great is sort of...duh. lebron wasn't either. i should bold that. down the stretch, he was doing jack, too, but won't get the heat.

Not going to panic or worry about losing the first game. The things that concern me all season are missing open shots and Kuz being inconsistent.

I can appreciate last year’s title and still point out that AD got outplayed by an inferior player this year. Both can be true.

I expected AD, with current injuries and all, to win his matchup against Ayton. If I’m being unreasonable with that, then that’s another conversation altogether.

    Lol it’s one game.

We lost the first game of the first few series last playoffs too.

Vogel will adjust matchups and game plan, and AD will come out aggressive next game. Too soon to jump out the window right now.

i'd say you're being unreasonable considering that most of ayton's minutes were against not AD?

now, if you want to argue that AD's refusal to start at center is a problem...i'm willing to listen.

but otherwise, he...AND EVERYONE ELSE...played a subpar game.

I fully expect this. Now, I'd prefer if he can go full bore without having extra motivation, because he is a superstar. But if he come out strong, dominate and help us win, I'll take it.

This is the number 1 mystery for me when it comes to AD. I understand wanting to play the 4 during the year to cut down on injuries. I understand not going full bore in a game in mid January but it’s the playoffs for god’s sake. If you have a bad game because you missed a lot of shots or the ball bounces the wrong way, ok but not going all out come playoff time is totally frustrating.

Pretty much. Being in the playoffs IS the motivation. It's now or.... well.... next season.

I’m just worried that sooner or later the “turn the switch on” strategy will backfire. AD will probably have a monster game on Tuesday and I can see us taking game 2, but this was a very winnable game in the sense that Chris Paul was injured and we never capitalized on it.

In the first half, Ayton appeared to be Drummond's cover and the latter had a bunch of blunders which allowed Ayton be a factor in the game. That is not on AD's watch, and you're right about that.

But also in the first half, I felt there were many instances were Ayton had better positioning and outrebounded both AD's and I count this as a loss on Davis' part. They are bigs and it's the paint. If one guy controls the paint, then both guys on the other team lost the match up... but that's just my opinion.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't AD playing center in the 4th? Ayton was rebounding and outplaying him there. I think that counts for something and I didn't like it.

But overall I agree that it's just 1 game and that AD will probably come out hot in game 2. I'm just saying, after a loss, there has to be room for objective criticism when the guys actually play bad.

A lot of you are missing the point.

AD knows that when he plays soft vs good teams, the Lakers are likely going to lose.

Yet, he still plays soft. He tries to get away with it. I want to see an aggressive AD from the get-go. You would never have to tell Dirk, KG, or Duncan to be great out there. It's almost every 5 games we have to have this discussion with AD.

And before any of you think AD can just flip the switch. Can he really? Since his return from injury, AD is shooting 21% from three and 41% from the field overall. That's a POWER FORWARD right there...

And AD sure talks a lot like he is a Lakers legend. You won a title, great. But you are no Kobe, LeBron, Magic, Kareem, or even Derek Fisher for the Lakers... Go out there and dominate instead of acting like you've proven yourself.

Not really. This is certainly not the first game. His entire time here he will show up one game and then disappear the next. This isn't an isolated incident to one game. If it was, none of us would be complaining. Everyone can have an off night. But his off nights aren't usually cause he is cold. He seems disinterested or even scared at times. This isn't "one game" or something. This is a pattern of behavior that often gets overlooked because Lebron is here and can win it on his own.
