Yeah I agree you cry wolf too often or go searching for contact it can come back to bite you. Good. That said I'll be devil's advocate guy for legitimate physics and players maligned for "flopping" just because they fell to the floor. Smaller player, Young, legs set with the screen, with balls properly protected , to take the contact ..... and gets knocked backwards to the floor by the much larger player. Time stamp .59. That is not a flop. But ..... see 1st sentence. Still waiting after years of asking, why ..... if it's a charge for the player with the ball facing the defender on his drive, to bull into him if the latter is directly in front of him outside of the restricted area, if that defender is set ..... yet as soon as the same offensive player with the ball turns his back on the defender who is set directly in his path to the basket ..... is allowed to use his strength and mass to bump the defender straight backward, just because "he can" ?
sounds like this ref was arguing with your last sentence, primarily. the defender didn't see the screen and just ran after his guy (i believe WCS there, young's my size and ran up behind him), hence "incidental contact". the screen was successful, as WCS's man got a couple steps. no advantage was gained by the defense by young falling, as if he had stood WCS up, he'd have still been tied up in the screen for the same amount of time. lots of crying for a pretty normal play, and that's after a game full of his typical antics. he got a 4-point opportunity by basically kicking his leg out after he landed on one play. just incredibly lame.
I got no skin in the game, haven't really followed him enough outside of highlight reels, if he is a flopper, then he probably deserved the no call, but have to say, watching it, he was fouled. That was a foul. If that happened to any of our guys, you would all be up in arms. Of course if our guys were floppers then you might actually call our guy out for it. If Kobe was on our team, you know he would call him out way before it was important. But, you can't get to the point in sports where you call fouls or not, based on reputation. That would seriously ruin the game. Who is assessing each players reputation and making these decisions??? Too political, I contend if you allow the league to be run that way, you might as well just announce the winner at the beginning of each season and play all the meaningless games like they are a pro wrestling match.
i'm not sure i agree it was a foul. i actually agree with the refs it was incidental contact, as they determined after discussing, apparently. think about it: if a small guy could fall down on a screen and get a foul called every time, then what? especially a screen set behind a defender. be ready to get hit hard if you're going to blindside guys literally almost twice your size. you could literally have one guard set screens for the other guard on every trip up the floor and just drop to the ground when the defender backpedals into him. foul. screen was legal. happens all the time and the refs let it go. they only call fouls on guys running through screens when it's in front of them and they could have gotten out of the way and instead spear the screener or something.
I would have to see that rule and how it is written or hear the referees have a verbal explanation that covers it in all circumstances. He was solidly planted with both feet and did not move an inch. I don't think that happens all that often. I have looked at it 50 times, he got to that spot first and stood flat footed, did not even lean a tiny bit, the offensive guy turned an hit him with his left shoulder. Is there some rule that says you have to give him some space before you are set?? Why is that incidental contact? Seems like he was trying to run a play and create space. I can't see how an offensive player can bump into him like that and no call. He met every condition for a charge call to be made. Seems to me that calling incidental is just a way for the refs to say, we ain't calling that with you involved. ???? Now, if there is actually anything in the rule books that explains this, then quote it and I will change my mind. I can quote you what constitutes a charging foul in the rule books and this will meet those rules.
FWIW, I just ran across a legal definition of why it wasn't called, so now I understand it. He placed himself in that spot without enough room for the guy to take a single step on a screen from behind him. When you turn on a screen, the offensive player is entitled to a single step. Who knew?? Apparently there is a rule for that. So ........ never mind.
i was about to cite that rule (but wasn't sure if it was official). but tbh, my point supersedes that: if a screener falls down on contact--even if they've provided a step--is that automatically a foul? if so, that's quite the can of worms from an officiating standpoint.
Well, you are assuming he fell down and was flopping. Did not look like a flop to me. Looked to me like a 250 lb guy jammed his shoulder into him and knocked him over. Whatever though, I concede that none of it really matters, it was not a foul on the other guy and in fact, according to the rules, they could have called a foul on Young.
i said fell down. if young was bigger, he wouldn't have fallen down. does falling down make it a foul? if so, again, dangerous precedent.
