Ahhh .... I see. Wow double whammy possible from other teams to try to take both AC and / or THT outright away from us in FA or put the screws to us financially with some poison pill offers to have to match or come fairly close to (in their and their agents’ eyes) for them to take less to stay. Especially if we do the same kind of “fair at least” extension in Schroeder’s eyes at the deadline. Sure wish Rob had some more help and “seasoning” to not screw up with these 3 players.
It's the nature of the cap, not Rob's fault. Fact is, we have AC's bird rights so we can go over the cap with them and we can pay Shroder. THT we could do a one year deal with and then we would have his bird rights. We are only around 6 mil over the lux tax this year due to the hard cap which is nothing for this organization, tax hit is like 9mil. But come this summer, if we re-up Dennis at say, 20mil per year, pay AC say, 12mil per year, Kuz's contract will kick in, who knows what we pay THT, we will be more like 40mil over the lux tax line and the penalty on that is 160 If this continued beyond next season into a 3rd luz tax year, the repeater tax would make that penalty 200mil. It really doesn't seem that big of a difference, 40mil basically. The dubs and Brooklyn are already over the cap to damn near that level so if they can absorb it, certainly we can. I think we can keep our guys, the question will be if they are worth it. edit: I forgot THT so I added another 10mil to the total. That makes the lux tax and repeater penalty a bit scarier. Also though it is scary amounts, you can look at it and say "The Lakers may not even break even if they are paying 300mil a year on the roster" I don't know the breakdowns but I know the tv deal is 3bil over 20 years, so 150mil every year, then there are advertisers, merch, tickets. The fact is though by keeping us in the big game and in the title hunt it is still building the brand and the value of the team. If it keeps us in the title hunt the Lakers' world-wide popularity makes it worth it. In the 2017-18 season, they recorded revenue of $395 million and an operating income of $147 million. this is after a severe drought in stars and playoffs, let alone championships. Even then we cleared 250mil. I think we can take the hit and just write off as "building the brand and the value of the organization" I look at it like this: if we increase the value of the organization by another billion in a few years... what money was lost?
You should know by now especially with the gifs added of course am not blaming Rob. All tongue in cheek channeling back to the summer and start of the season after Magic left. But I agree and think Jeanie will step up to the plate with a chance these next couple of years to win more rings with this outstanding and getting better guard core complementing LeBron and AD.
That's a nice finish by Harrell too. I've been impressed with his touch around the rim. That in-between shot is not easy
I always think it's short but it goes in. he's got a magical mini floater that seems to work very well for him
The problem is, this is a family run organization. They do NOT have other money anymore. They have a number of family members who live off of their income from this team. They do not have billions of dollars sitting in some bank that they can live off while this team loses money. Can't happen. If this team reaches the point where they have to lose money to stay competitive, my guess is the Buss family will choose to sell it. That would, most likely, not be a good thing.
I've thought about that. not sure if it would be a good thing or not. The Lakers would probably sell for more money than any other franchise. That means whoever buys will have to have DEEP pockets. And you don't buy a glamour franchise like the Lakers to run it like a business where it's all about making money. I'm confident that if the Lakers are ever sold, it will be to someone the Buss family approves of and is going to only be concerned about winning.
Wouldn't it be safe to assume that AEG's 27% stake can help alleviate short term losses? The Buss family isn't the richest, but I'd assume losing money for a couple years while competing for championships is still good business in the long term.
Still the Time Warner / (AT&T now) contract too, right? I had thought it was only for 10 years back coincidentally when Dwight and Nash came, but someone else said it was for 20 years. Working out to roughly 150M per season?
I had always heard it had incentives for up to 200M per season. ???? But that their basic agreement was for 20 years at 3 billion, which is 150M per season. There was something about them having rights to income from the the broadcast rights as well. ???? That could be where there is some differences that people have pondered.
As far as I know, none of them ever has had another source of money. Lawd knows none of them have had real jobs. All the Buss's have received inheritance enough that a good financial manager has set them up to live well off the interest alone (greedy bastards like Jim and Johnny aside). Though the other 4 could vote them out of a decision such as roster spending and Jeanie has overall say. I remember back in '09 when we had to resign Odom who was nearly let walk to higher-paying teams because he would cost us dearly in lux tax and eat into the slim profit margin (this was pre-ginormous TV deal).... Dr Buss said "But we're so damn competitive" (with him). I know that spirit carries on with the 4 Buss's not named Jim and Johnny. Of course they want to be profitable now but they want to build the brand more than anything as it's their equity too and especially now. When you have a cash cow in that regard, as in a championship team, and the Lakers worldwide popularity, you ride that cow like there is no tomorrow because the next 6-10 year drought will come after AD's prime time here and if the Buss's decide to sell then, after adding another 2-3 championships in that time, the value of this team will increase a lot. A big % increase on an already 4-5 billion-valued team is a lot more than the profits they might lose initially by not ponying up for a heavily-lux taxed team. And I hope Rob goes out and finds star vets willing to come and wear the P&G for veteran's minimums and we make the world's best roster for under the cap. We've already got $110 mil on the books and you can add $20 to that just for Shroder because you know we will resign him and it won't be for $15 anymore. And that doesn't include Montrell or AC or any vet mins or rookies. So at least for the short term, it will be impossible to keep it under the cap. And there's Brooklyn out there and the dubs will be back if they don't die of old age and stay healthy. We have to stay competitive. Just read that our local and national tv revenues bring in 300mil yearly and that is besides all other revenues.
