This is why tou make the deal for AD every freaking time. Max money goes to a lot of players, but only a handful are really worth it. As much as I like BI (love the guy, seriously), you won't have a high chance of winning it all with him being paid the max on your team. The same applies to most of the "stars" in the league. You just cannot invest too big a part of your cap into 1-2 players who are not truly elite and expect to be able to build a championship roster around them.

Long story short, due to how the salary cap is constructed, having true superstars is imperative and a necessity if you want to win the trophy. We have 2 of them for the next 3 seasons, now let's roll...

Makes me wonder (again) how sentient is doing nowadays, I hope he found a happy place on the internet.

MEH I think this guy has reached his ceiling winning the title in his first year, if he matches that this season, what is new? Boring signing if you ask me...:ADGlance:

    5 years???

And here we all were expecting a 1 or 2 year deals.

Is there something Klutch and these guys know that we don't thats making them NOT sign these short term 1-2 year deals?

Hey don't get me wrong ill take AD and Bron committing next 3 years but this is so different from Klutch's style in their recent dealings.

Fair enough. I see where you are coming from, but still don't agree. IMO you don't have to be very vocal to be a true leader. AD leads by example with his work ethic, both on and off the court, and was truly amaxing in this championship run. He had some huge games and moments, and hit a game winner in the process. In my book he proved himself as a leader, but each of us can have their own definition and criteria. Guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that one ;).

One more point - I would also love him to "be more tough" and dunk on some fools each game, byt I have come around and accept him as he is. If he proved anything this last postseason, it's that he can truly dominate the game on both ends even with a heavy reliance of the midrange jumper. Nobody could defend him and he was super efficient without all the dunking and pushing people around. And guess what, that might just help his longevity.

I agree you need 2 stars. What I don't agree with was the suggestion that we need AD and one more guy that has to be better than AD, because AD ain't good enough to be the 1A option on a championship squad.

I know there are some truly amazing guys in the league, but seriously, if I could choose one guy for this team to sign for the next 5 years, AD would be my first option. He has been even before he joined the Lakers, can't even express how happy I am to have him on my Lakers for the forseeable future.

Max on First Take: "AD has the potential to be the best power forward ever. The Lakers will have had the best PG ever. 2nd best shooting guard ever. Best small forward ever. Take your pick at center and they have it."

I think AD’s 5 year deal may have more to do with security then anything else. Look at what happened to Boggie, didn’t sign the super max contract and now he’s on a non guaranteed. Can’t have a bigger drop then that. Same thing with Bron. He’s getting older and although he looks great now, anything can happen at his age.

I feel bad for Boogie. He was so close to getting a guaranteed max but got injured. Same with Isaiah Thomas. Played his heart out through injuries and a death with his family member and then gets injured and never saw that huge payday. If players can get that kind of money and haven't gotten a contract like that before, they need to jump at it. Very few guys, (KD, LeBron, Kawhi, Kobe) will get the max because of how good they are even through injuries.

Nah, I'm sure he proceeded with something along the lines of "but look at this supporting cast of misfits. Can you imagine the tension in this locker? This team will blow up one month into the season. Did I mention how old LeBron is? This team may not even reach the playoffs as currently constructed, and don't even get me started on the future of this franchise"

4-5 years is great! If things go South, he's one of the best tradeable assets you could ever have under a long term contract.

Yep , seeing the KD, Klay of this world going down with serious injuries , plus I guess his camp judged the risk to wait for the 10 years in the league max contract wasn't worth it with the probable decrease of the salary cap.

CBA could change depending on the pandemic, so we'll have to wait and see. Probably a wise idea to lock in the most dollars prior to any changes so he stays at the top of whatever changes could be coming.

What a fantastic close to a phenomenal offseason. 5 years of AD in his prime? Yes yes and more yes. I also like that Lebron has extended his contract as well. We are good to go!!

I wonder if they have insight that has them worried that COVID/the financial struggles of the NBA might lead to a big restructuring of the CBA.

Like we all assumed he might do a 2+1 so he can opt out and sign a larger contract once he has 10 years of experience. But what if the entire rulebook that dictates that a 10 year player gets a larger max is thrown out the window in 2 years?

Or maybe even with current CBA structure, maybe NBA’s revenue continues to drop, leading to a corresponding drop in cap/max slot. So while AD would get a small bump in his max with 10 years of experience, maybe that bump for experience would get applied to what is overall a lower maximum contract.
