I don't think so. This is KCP's 2nd year with LA? Need 3 years to get bird rights.

right, but even if he signs the minimum this year, we have full bird rights next year. meaning that we can go up to the max, almost regardless of cap status. not that we would, but we could.

given how few teams will have cash next year, his bird rights could probably recoup what he would lose by signing the min this year, either to stay or in a s&t somewhere. it's a win/win. and he owes us for overpaying him the last two years.

That's some 4D chess Pelinka is playing.

Overpay Klutch client KCP $17M in 2017
    Overpay him $12M in 2018
Veteran Minimum in 2019, in the year we need that Kawhi cap space
Breaks out in 2019-2020 playing with a superteam
Boom, he becomes an asset who we own the bird rights to

Kawhi's best opportunity to win multiple championships (like Cris Carter said this morning), is with the Lakers. The Raptors have a great medical staff and infrastructure, but the Lakers can offer Kawhi winning, playing close to home, and endorsements. He would be walking away from a dynasty.

And that is why he should go there. AD and Kawhi have a chance at being the best duo in NBA history if they play their cards right. Lakers will always spend and make sure they are equipped with the right talent around them. That has to be the clincher.

Doesnt matter. In order to have the 32 mill almost max for Kawhi, we gotta renounce all our other players - which means renouncing KCP and his bird rights.

The Lakers can keep his Early Bird Rights by signing him again to a minimum contract, but not his Full Bird Rights. I'm not positive, but I believe we can still use those Bird Rights to go over the cap. @vasashi17 is the man with those answers.

Lakers have KCP Early Bird Rights, they can pay him more than minimum, either up to 175% of his previous salary or 105% of the league average salary, whichever is greater. In theory they could offer him $18M for next season, without worrying about the cap.

Renouncing cap holds will not give you any new cap space.
