    Small update:

-Kawhi was looped into the business conversation his camp had with NB/AEG on Saturday and he was very happy to hear the projected numbers and plans for his brand in LA. Apparently as long as Kawhi feels he can trust the Lakers FO after his discussions with Jeanie and Magic, he will most likely become a Laker.

-Kawhi was sold on the Lakers ability to keep him healthy thanks to Kobe's praise of Judy Seto.

-He's also confident in his ability to win for the long term thanks to having LeBron and Anthony Davis, and is appreciative of LeBron's willingness to take a backseat for him and AD to prosper. Apparently LeBron giving up his number was a huge signal to Kawhi that he's serious about winning above all.

-There's still some skepticism on how Magic departed and how the Lakers FO operates internally. It's the main thing holding him back right now. He views the Raptors and Masai Ujiri as superior in this regard.

    Best Regards,
    Mr. Rambis

If that's the only encumbrance, then there shouldn't be an issue. The Lakers at the end of the day, Magic or no, will take care of their players and especially their stars. Whatever happened with Magic and Jeanie would have no effect whatsoever on Kawhi or AD or any other Lakers on the floor.

As it is, I think Magic is happier with this situation and clearly the Lakers are doing extremely well with Rob in the position he is in now.

If what you say is true, then I don't see how Kawhi could not be a Laker in a few days' time.

@therealdeal Very thoughtful analysis! It seems as though Kawhi does have a large degree of trust in how well run the Raptors organization is and is happy that Masai Ujiri is committed for the long haul. He was upset as the drama surrounding the Lakers FO earlier, in contrast. This is a major point that's holding him back, but as long as he feels comfortable after hearing from Jeanie and Magic, he will be a Laker. All the other boxes have been checked off for him.

In short, I wouldn't downplay the significance of the front office trust issues, but yes, based on what I'm hearing AEG is increasingly confident that Kawhi will become a Laker and they're very excited about the possibility! Getting into New Balance now and having things blow up with Kawhi on the Lakers would be a fantastic investment for them!

I'm not saying it to downplay the issues, only that those issues should be for the most part resolved. For example: let's say there was actual backstabbing here and Rob ratted out Magic and all the other bad things we've heard. Even if that's true, which would be insanely difficult to prove, that's all over and done with.

If Magic and Jeanie are on the same page, you simply explain to Kawhi and Dennis that those issues were issues in the past, but everyone is happier now for them to be over. Magic gets to say and do what he wants again, Rob gets to handle the details like he was brought in to do in the first place. Sure Magic isn't in control anymore, but that's okay. In the end, this team seems to be run like a family business and this kind of thing happens sometimes with families. If everyone is happy now and pulling in the same direction, there should be no hold up.

As for the shoe/business side I've never doubted for an instant, and this is without your apparent knowledge of the numbers, that he would make many, many times what he'd make with another team. I mean every indicator shows it. I'm sure the number itself will be more impressive than what I would guess, but the business side never wavered: he (and really any star) is going to make more money with a Laker logo on their stuff.

I think the clincher was getting Davis and showing Kawhi that we've got now the means to lengthen his career, give him the utmost success possible on the court, and the potential to build a dynastic run that few other teams have accomplished.

If that were the case, Kawhi wouldn't be talking to the Lakers. Besides, anyone with half a brain knows Magic didn't do jack s*** other than stalk Lebron last year at 12:01. Rob Pelinka has the blessing of Kobe Bryant. Kobe is a beast and I am sure anyone who knows anything knows if Kobe props you up, you got the goods. Rob has the goods. The only blemish is that stupid Dark Knight thing.

The fact that Kawhi is willing to even consider joining the Lakers has everything to do with business, the presence of Lebron and AD and to an unknown extent, Uncle Dennis' relationship with Magic. Aside from getting us that max slot, Pelinka brings nothing of value to the table here with regard to Kawhi and we're screwed if we're really relying on him to help close on Kawhi. I think that meeting with Magic and Jeanie has a lot more to do with whether Kawhi's camp can trust Pelinka going forward than anything else.

Which was pretty f---ing hilarious. Despite being a Laker fan and knowing how bad the optics looked on that one, I did laugh out loud with all my coworkers (other Laker fans) while watching the video. We kept joking that Rob meant Heath Ledger in A Knight's Tale, not Dark Knight. Kobe loved Heath's dedication to the part in a Knight's Tale.

I think you’re exactly right. They’re going to bait magic into trashing rob. Magic better swallow his pride and wash Rob’s balls to them.

What a beautiful story it would be if Kawhi, in leveraging whether to come to the Lakers being based on if he can sense the togetherness of Jeanie and Magic, actually brings those two back together to become the Lakers family franchise that he grew up loving as a Lakers fan. Kawhi’s arrival fixes the Lakers family. The End.

I’m ready for the f***ing 4-Peat, let’s gooooooooo!! (And too late Pat, I already trademarked it.)
